Hi Fitzy

You have probably been asked this a million times but are the Bass in the
Brisbane river breeding or are they all from dam spillage?

Thanks

Richard

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the Email.
The general consensus is that the bass do breed in the Brisbane River, but not very well. Adult bass & fry cannot get back upstream past Mt Crosby Weir near Ipswich so their range is vastly diminished.
There is also some water up the Bremer River with a couple of creeks that the bass can get back up.
Bass are stocked above Mt Crosby Weir every season & so are the lakes upstream with in the Brisbane River catchment (Somerset, Wivenhoe, Cressbrook, Moogerah). In flood situations some bass do escape from the lakes into the river.

Hope that helps, Fitzy..

hi Fitzy , wonder if you can help me with this. thanks pete.
Gday guys..Myself and a couple of guys from my work are going to give the fresh scene a start as we have never done it....we are going in the 1st week of april so can anyone pleases give me a helping hand.....we would love to get a feed of redclaw firstly and any type of fresh water fish secondly.. even eels.
We"re from brissy so where could we go to try, and have a reasonable chance of success. I,m really keen to get A fish on my plastics, but finding this difficult in the salty stuff.
I reckon 1 good trip in the fresh and I probably would be converted as so many salties are being.
Okay, any help offered is greaty appreciated. Thanks

Fitzy, does sommerset have redclaw in it as that looks like a great place to start.

There's only really 3 spots in SEQ (that i know of) that have decent numbers of redclaw. They are Lakes Somerset, Wivenhoe & Samsonvale. There's also Lake Barambah up you want to drive up past Nanango.
Access to Lake Samsonvale is electric only & with a limited permit only. Wivenhoe has ok access but is electric motors only.
Somerset is all boating access with good facilities. Not as many redclaw here as in Wivenhoe & Samsonvale but you can still get a good feed at times. This is also your best place to get into bass on plastics.

There other lakes where you can get a fish on plastics easier than those above (eg Maroon) , but none of them have redclaw. Hope that helps.
Cheers, Fitzy..

Hi Fitzy, What sort of conditions can I expect at the spit boat ramps at Somerset.
Will any of them be in water, and if they are not will I be able to launch in a car or will I need 4wd.
Thinking of going up there this week with the wife so I don't want any problems( if you know what I mean).
Also do you know of any accomadation at monduran dam, like cabins. I thought I heard of such accomodation recently.
I like your new site
Keep up the good work

Thanks M
PS. I finding your thread on Overfishing at Somerset very interesting, Fair comment I think.

G'Day M,
Lake Somerset is currently around 38%. The main ramp at the Spit will be out of the water & the low one (right next to it) should be close to being in the water again with a slight rise in water levels this past week. The drop off the end of it is pretty steep however. I'd advise launching on the point side of the low ramp. The ground is fairly solid there & you should be able to launch without a 4X4 without too much drama. I've launched my 5m plate boat there with only a 2x4 alot & never been bogged. You will see where everyone else has been putting in, follow their lead.
The gates there are only open during daylight hours & it costs you $50 from memory to get let out after hours.
There is now some acoomodation at Lake Monduran. There are cabins up on the hill for rent & there's a good campground right next to the wall with kiosk etc. The contact number I have for up there is 07 4157 3881.
Thanks for feeback on the site.
Cheers, Fitzy..

Hi Fitzy.
Was wondering when you will be getting some dam maps in NSW? The new layout looks great.
TIA. Sam W.
G'Day Sam,

Have been busy a lizard drinking lately getting the new format working. Have already started on a few NSW lake maps with more to come soon. See HERE. Hope to be bringing some local knowlege onto the site as I expand further south, north & west.
Thanks for the feedback, Fitzy..
