Storm King Dam

I was at Stanthorpe on the weekend..a drinking weekend not fishing. Went to have a look at the dam..decent camp grounds there..is it worth venturing up there for a fishing weekend? Does anyone know what it is stocked with?

Not sure on the camping, you never used to be able to camp out there, maybe it has changed. The dam has been stocked with Cod, Yellas & has a endemic population of Eel Tail Catfish. Hope you enjoyed your weekend up there. I am planning on spending a bit of time up there after Christmas, chasing Cod in the river, if you  & Sue are interested I would be happy to show you around some of my old haunts.

I've never done epspecially well at Storm King Dam, though I know folks who certainly have. A couple of average cod & a few golden perch & that's it for me, oh & a tandanus on a spinnerbait.

I'd be taking Andrew up no that offer... 

Andrew have you ever gone down the Maryland River that runs through Amosfield/Liston? Some magically country in there, lots of brown snakes too however.

Never fished the Maryland River, have done a bit further down the range at Rivertree in the headwaters of the Clarence, mainly Eels & catty,s.
Do you know if there are any fish in the Maryland?

Like you said, only sighted Eels & Tandans (eel tailed catfish). In theory there should be cod there. Property owners where I've been recon they've not seen cod in 30 + years up there. Fingers crossed there's still some remnants up there (if there ever was)

There is some wild country down that way, the Maryland River joins the Boonoo Boonoo River to form the Clarence River, so as you say their is a possibility of Eastern Cod still being in some of the waterholes, however I think a lot of that creek would have been pretty badly affected by the drought. I can remember my grandfather talking about cod being caught out of the Boonoo Boonoo River near Undercliff Falls.
A lot of years ago  a bunch of pilots were planning a canoe trip down the length of the Clarence, I was lucky enough to be invited along to do a recce of the Clarence by Chinook. We started at the headwaters & flew at a couple of hundred feet above the river all the way to the coast
Lots of fishy looking water was flown over.

It would have been an awesome trip to do.  I drive over the hills from past the Mann River the other week, it got me all excited to go kayak some of the country again...

Back to Storm King Dam, I noticed a sign on the broadwater side of Stanthorpe last weekend about a resort at the dam. Any idea if this is still there? And if so how long its been there? I don't remember one, but its been a while since i snooped around SKD.

there is a caravan park on the bank of the dam..powered and unpowered site plus some small cabins and also a couple of larger "houses". Easy accdess to the waters edge..could be a good weekend there with the kayak.

We stayed at the Sommerville tourist park during the first weekof January. spent a few nights in the "luxury cabins". Mid week prices werent too bad for 4 or 5 people. Had 2 queen and one single beds in 2 rooms.
Was very nice cabins. very peaceful as is in private area and park facilities seems pretty good.
Best thing was cabins were nice so missus was happy to sit and relax while i went fishing.
Took the tinny and caught a few small yella's. Were a few people on kayaks and some towing tubes for the kids.
All up seems a good family spot.
