Aboriginal Experiences: Painting, Throwing Spears, Fishing & Croc Charging!

Here are a few adventures i'm lucky to have experienced in life.

Hi Dick,

We may have needed a container load of rods to use on Cleetis the Croc as he was back every 20mins or so.

The locals found a better priced commodity to bomb away with.  MUD

Not as efficient as lead Fitzy thats for sure.
The Croc charging pics are from the Katherine River.

It is a cranky bugger for sure Dave. 
Most likely a wise old one who knows how to bluff plenty of locals and tourists out of fish...

On a hunting note, it sized you up.  Everytime some skinny locals beat us to the spot, it had them up the bank, laying across
the fishing area saying "I'm Boss".  However when Gorilla confronted the Croc it eventually scattered then there was a stalemate of about 5-7meters.  I reckon it got to around 2.5meters on the charge and surfaced a couple of meters away when it got a bit cheeky in that last pic.
Cleetis (Local nickname) managed to steal more than a few Barra each day off local fisho's, so i guess crime pays...

On a funny note, I skipped one barra through it's mouth, i couldn't believe it.  The Barra was shitting itself and jumping like Tarpon.  I thought that one deserved to live, so it was released quick smart.  All in all it was good fun having good old Cleetis around on a daily basis.

Hi mate,

It's a Kurrajong Tree.   A couple of varieties up north and a few around oz.
Jarwon people used this one.  There would be many variants between areas, tribes and languages etc.

Ligaments hey, might have to give potatoe a call, he's an expert in that field if you need a hand to get back on the paddock earlier.
Don't go kicking any 100kg pumpkins anytime soon












Painting of the animals was done with traditional grass brushes.  If you have ever used them you will know that they are bloody hard work when compared to a new paint brush etc.  The backgrounds were painted with a normal brush to speed things up etc.

Tip:  Unless Quality Paint and Canvas is used your art will fall to bits in a few years.  Many a traveller/backpacker will find this out when it's too late, e.g. when they are 10 000 miles away.

I agree, it doesn't get any better than exploring what Oz has to offer.
Even better if we can inspire some of the next generation to continue doing this as well.

Good stuff Lynton, a thirty cal would have made a better deterrant on the croc, or maybe a rolled up newspaper, but then you would not have had so much fun... Who's the big white fella with his feet on the dinner table? He's probably like me if I got curled up like the local bloke I'd need the Flying Doctor.

I've been looking and leaving my details at quite a few old book stores around these traps mate in the hope to come across some history of the Aborigines of this land for you. I've been reading about the Gubbi Gubbi tribe and would love to meet an elder of this region, I find it as fascinating as you do I suppose.

At a guess I take it that is Justin in one of those later pictures? He's still built like a brick out house.

Like the paintings mate! I've been doing the odd sketch in the hope to create a painting of one of my favourite places and fish. Just need more time, it'll eventually go in the living room above the fireplace.

In the picture: The most southern circle is our place with the black track (Bruce Hwy) leading to the next circle which represents a waterhole near Bucca. The wavey lines leading to the next circle is the symbol of a creek or river, in this case it is the Kolan River which leads to another waterhole, Lake Monduran where I enjoy spending time catching Barramundi. The surrounding areas will be in the dot form of painting and I still might add my family in the first circle by adding the symbols of arches, sitting around our backyard campfire.

Love your work Dave, awesome painting.

You can see you have spent time up north.  I like the thoughts behind your painting and the layout mate.  Go for it as it's your story and means something to you like the paintings i described, they mean something to the people that paint them.
