Brad does dad in the rust and mud

Went back to the rust water today for a bit of variety and chasing a feed.  Took the young fella with me, been a while since we fished together.  The creek is about 120 ks north of town, most of that is station track.  We got a bit of residual storm activity just before dawn turning the black soil slippery but not enough to turn it boggy. That will just be a matter of time, with the road turning into a swamp during the wet.






Tide was incoming and about half in when we got to the ramp.  Launching involves lowering the trailer over the drop as far as it goes, sliding the boat off into the mud and then spinning it around and sliding it into the water.  Mud, rid and sand flies are a great combination. 











We fished the rest of the incoming for barra, concentrating on the snags, got a couple and got blown away as well (as you do ).  It was about here that Brad's reel had a dummy spit and lost it's anti reverse.  I pulled it apart in transit to find the brass gear had succumbed to one too many fish.  Funnily enough that incident seemed to initiate a gear swap, giving me a bad case of knuckle rap an hour or so later.





On the top of the tide we shot up to a rock bar and tidied up a few cod, fingermark and a nice jack.  The water is a bit over a metre or two deep and you only get an hour or so on the top end of tides over 5 metres, all good stuff! Brad picked up the lions share of the fish and set the scene for the rest of the day, didn't he give me some stick about that.















With the outgoing the barra went a bit quiet so we finished up with a few fingemark and some juvenile mulloway.  Got in five nice little sessions over the day, no monsters but good fun and never a dull moment.






The day ended with the retrieve and a two hour drive back into town, young fella celebrated by heading off to the pub, I'm heading for the sack

What an awesome day you fella's had!

Great report and photos Dick, for me I like the close up shots of the cod.

Those bank lauches bring back some memories for me bush camping lowing the boat and then the motor down cliff faces on the McIntyre River near Goondiwindi. We didn't have to keep a look out for lizards though.

Brad looks like a chip off the old block and has obviously pick up a few fishing traits from the master.

great stuff as per the usual Dick. reminds me of the mission i did a few weeks ago to a remote gulf river here over east

if you don't mind me asking which lens are you using with the 50D? i'm just about to buy one, doing my research.....

Just a kit lens 24 - 85 that came with the old Canon 30 (film camera) It fits OK but there's a bit of an image issue due to the diufferent casmera formats, shoots slightly wider thatn what you see in the viewfinder, better that than the otherway.

If I had the extra $ at the time I would have picked up a EF 24-70 as my standard lens, The new computor to run the thing was more important at the time.

thanks for the info..the APS-C size cmos would account for that difference. really want the 24-105 as an allrounder but its more that the 50D body! so i'm thinking a 28-135 thats been optimised for the EOS (APS-C) cameras as a start. need a decent macro too for close ups of my rods (started writing a rod column for a mag recently) but that'll have to wait for a bit
