Spent the weekend with StevenM down at Glenlyon Dam. I'm a bit shattered but thought I would post some pics with a more in depth report later once the families duties are done.

Dumaresq was by far the more productive over the Mole but both are pretty rivers. Thanks Steve for showing me around and I'm sure I'll be back now my cod cherry is popped.

good stuff saw you guys last night and this morning as i left was going to come say hi....i was camped behind you guys in the burnt orange captiva and qinny hornet trophy....was too quiet on the dam for me so left this morning maybe should have gone to the river

Big weekend

Hammered actually

Was a quite one Friday with two cod and we dropped about 5

Saturday we got 17 cod and 3 yellas. The one Wayne got one yella at night on our surface mission

Today, 3 cod, 2 yella's and a few dropped in a quick session.

Need rest will post some pics tomoz.

Should have come over Brett. Never saw your gear or ya head mate.

Let me tell you a story about a man named Jed, poor mountaineer barely kept his family fed, then one ….

Ok no that’s not right.

This is a story about a man named Wayne. He needed to get himself a cod. So I organized to do a bit of fishing with him down the border rivers.

Wayne can tell you all the ins and outs and his side of things and experiences, from me it will be pretty short and sweet.

That’s Wayne, recon he is all excited or what?

So it was onto the river and away we went

It was not all that easy and the first pool never had any takers, they were there for sure, but we needed to do a bit of this first

It took a couple of hours but he did finally manage to get a bend in his rod.

To say he was happy by now was probably a bit of a understatement. Now did I tell you he had a celebration beer at 5.30 in the morning and we hadn’t even got our feet wet yet.
Took some pics for of Wayne holding his fishies. I haven’t got any of Wayne myself but cod look the same right. SO it would have looked like this …but bigger of course.

We did all right but in the end we did have to turn around and start heading back

Wayne never missed a opportunity and he was getting into all sorts of depths looking for them

You really couldn’t stop the bloke, if the water looked good he wanted to have a go at it no matter what he had to do

It wasn’t all green for Wayne but. He got 7 green ones on Saturday but not to be outdone he also managed 3 yellow ones as well

That’s about it from me. He is a shot of Glenlyon from the look out. Nice huh.

And here is a question for ya. Why did the Turtle cross the road?

That bloke would have been about 150meters from the river heading for the hills. He was relocated but some might say that they may need an umbrella down there shortly.

It all started at 1:30 on Saturday morning when the alarm went off. 3 hours sleep, plenty. Loaded up the esky into the car and I was on the road by 1:45 for the leisurely 4 hour drive to Glenlyon. Met up with Steve and chucked my yak and bits onto his car and we were heading for the launch spot by the time his alarm went off at 6am. We went through a gate and Steve got out and said he needed to see where the track went. I said what track? All I could see was 6ft high grass!! We pushed through it and there she was. The picturesque Dumaresq. Having never caught a cod before I was very excited. Steve had promised me one on this trip so I had a celebratory beer before launching in the anticipation of my first Murray Cod.

We went upstream of the gravel pit as Steve had never fished that section before. The fishing started off slowly. It probably took an hour or more for Steve to hook up on the first cod. I probably took another 30mins before I finally had my first cod in the yak. I borrowed Steve’s lip grips and whacked them in it’s gob for a photo. As I was lifting it out of the net it went berserk and ended up over the side with the grips still in it’s mouth and I had already taken out the hooks. I looked at Steve in horror. Then I could still feel the fish tugging on the line. How the bloody hell have I still got this fish. It should be off under it’s snag with the lip grips (like Dave’s). By pure luck the line had got caught around the curly accessory strap (that I should have clipped to my yak) and I managed to get it back in for a photo. Whew!! OK now my cherry is popped I am happy and can just start to relax and fish.

The rest of the day gets a bit hazy after that. Too busy pulling in fish left, right and centre to remember who got what. A few memorable snags though. First one was just an average size rootball. Steve pulled a bass off it and while he was unhooking I had another crack at it and a cod hit my spinnerbait as soon as it landed. Then while I was unhooking Steve fired in another cast and pulled another cod and then another. 4 cod from one snag, unbelievable.

After my cod I decided to chuck on a popper as it was basically a surface hit on my spinnerbait. So I threw it out across the river just to get my aim in with it. It landed about 5 metres from the bank and I gave it a few twitches. Hmm that looked like a bit of a boil, few more twitches, nothing. Oh well started winding it back in faster to get it out there again, 3 or 4 cranks of the handle and a cod launched at it and missed. Woohoo. I fired another cast in the same spot and had another cod roll away after looking at it. A few casts later for nothing I moved on to the next likely looking snag. Fired in a cast and the water exploded. Yee haa. The cod came up and the lure was jammed vertically in it’s mouth, he was hungry. I’m still smiling about that hit.

The last memorable snag was another ordinary looking small laydown. Nothing flash but I put my first three casts into it with a hit and miss every time. 4th cast and I got him on. Unhook him and let him go and next cast, same snag and I was on again, and a third time 3 fish in 3 casts and I was cheering. While I was unhooking my 3rd Steve cast in there and was on as well. 4 casts, 4 fish on a very ordinary looking snag, unbelievable.

Steve let me go first at all the slack water near some running water and let me wake the fish up so he could cast in after me and catch all the cod, he’s a top bloke. We finished the day with 17cod and 3 yellas. A quick night session saw no action except for a lonely yella I caught on a spinnerbait.

The next day we headed to the Mole and the results were not what we were hoping for with only 3 cod boated and another two yellas. Still a nice river just wasn’t on fire today. Plus the session was shorter. All up a sensational trip for me. My final tally was 7 cod and 5 yellas, taking over the Golden Child award from Steven. Steve got 10 cod and 1 yella.

Good times, good laughs, good company and some good farts as well.

I took my wife down to the Dumaresq River today so she could catch her first Murray Cod . Left home around 5ish and after driving 320kms we arrived at the desired launching area ( sometime after 9am ) .We started at the same place as Steve and Wayne did the fortnight before and went upstream. Was slow going for the first few hours with only a couple of bumps , switching between spinnerbaits and timber hardbodies.

Eventually the fish started taking the timber lures. I was using a Garra Tera and Alison was using something she had raided from my tacklebox which I have no idea what its called. Bought it from the Sports store in Tenterfield a couple of months ago.

Any ideas on the brand? Timber with a plastic bib.
Anyway , we both caught 4 Cod each along with a Yellowbelly each. I'll let the pics tell the story.
