THOUSANDS OF TROUT RELEASED INTO NEW HOME NEAR GOULBURN

Recreational anglers will be afforded more fishing opportunities with 10,000 rainbow trout and 5,000 brown trout stocked into Pejar Dam near Goulburn, Minister for Primary Industries and Member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson said today.

The trout stocking program, which is supported with funds from the NSW recreational fishing licence fee and placed into the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, kicked off today.

“These fingerlings will provide yet another reason for anglers to throw a line in at Pejar Dam and is ideal for locals and visitors hoping to pursue their love of fishing in the area for years to come,” Ms Hodgkinson said.

“Pejar Dam is already a popular spot for trout anglers because of its reputation for producing trophy-sized trout.

“This fish stocking has come just at the right time as reported catches of trout in Pejar Dam have been down in recent times which may be because some fish have escaped downstream during floods.

“The fish were bred at NSW DPI’s Gaden Trout Hatchery and will be transported to Goulburn to be released.”

Ms Hodgkinson said more anglers are expected to flock to Pejar Dam this summer after Goulburn Mulwaree Council recently agreed to allow the use of electric motors on watercraft at the Dam.

“The Gaden Trout Hatchery staff commenced stocking trout into dams and lakes in late November and this stocking will continue until March,” Ms Hodgkinson said.

During the 2011/12 season the following fingerlings have been produced at the Gaden Trout Hatchery for stocking into lakes and dams throughout the Southern Highlands,

Snowy Mountains and Central Tablelands:
 Atlantic Salmon - 223,000
 Brook Trout - 40,000
 Rainbow Trout - up to 377,000
 Brown Trout - up to 84,000
