Aussie bass back on the menu

News release | 30 August, 2012 - Qld Fisheries

Recreational fishers will be able to catch Australian bass in Queensland waters from this weekend (1 September).

Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) district officer Coby Walker said the bass had been off limits between 1 June and 31 August due to their breeding cycle.

"This annual closure period is vital to protecting Australian bass during vulnerable times and is aligned to their breeding cycle within Queensland's southeast river systems," he said.

"Australian bass migrate down rivers within their natural range to spawn within the brackish marine systems each year.

"The closed season is an important measure in sustaining fish stocks for the future. The minimum legal size for Australian bass is 30 cm, with a possession limit of two per person."

Mr Walker said Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) dams did not have closed seasons and many were currently filled with good supplies of Aussie bass.

"It's easy to enjoy a fish at an impoundment - just jump online and purchase a permit for $7.20 a day or $36.05 for the year," he said.

Money from these permits goes towards restocking the dams and helping to sustain native fish stocks.
