Millmerran Carp Buster coughs up a whopper fish

The inaugural Millmerran Carp Buster over the weekend was a hit with more than 100 people registering and a “whopper” of a carp winning the biggest carp prize for a local angler.
Hosted by the Millmerran Landcare Group and supported by the Queensland Murray-Darling Committee (QMDC), the weekend-long event kicked off at Yarramalong Weir near Pampas with anglers of all ages travelling from as far as Dirranbandi to cast a line.
Millmerran Landcare Coordinator Rebecca Kirby was pleased with the turn out despite hot weather on Saturday and gusty conditions on Sunday.
“This is the first time Millmerran Landcare has hosted a Carp Buster event and we’re delighted to support a series that has attracted thousands of keen fishermen, women and children over the last six years, and plays such a vital role in raising awareness of pest fish,” Ms Kirby said.
“We were thrilled to see more than 260 carp weighing in at 268 kilograms removed from our local waterways.
“Congratulations to the Grundon family of Millmerran who caught the biggest carp weighing in at a whopping 4.65kg,” she said.
QMDC Weeds and Pest Animals Technical Officer Nathan Morgan said it was great to see so many people continue to support the successful Carp Buster series.
“This is the most easterly event in the eight-event series which makes it a little easier for anglers from Millmerran, Toowoomba and Warwick to join in the effort,” Mr Morgan said.
“The best thing about the Carp Buster series is that people learn about pest fish whilst having fun, so it’s a win-win situation.”
The next Carp Buster weekend will be in Goondiwindi on October 26 and 27 with further events in the current series being held in early 2014.
