Title: Best lures and retrieves to imitate shrimp?
Post by: BMESS on October 01, 2012, 01:10:54 PM
Went for a fish down the usual spot today (Denison creek at nebo) heaps of action, the fish were chasing shrimp around and wouldn't have a bar of any offering or retrieve I used.
Mostly sooties, few spangles and some saratoga were out, saw a near metre long 'toga smash a shrimp and launch out of the water, quite the sight!
After getting chased by a brown snake I've retreated for a while and doing my head in on the best retrieve and lure combination to imitate shrimp, any suggestions?

There are a few new shrimp imitations just come out on the market.  Zerek I believe is distributed by Wilson fishing.  There are a few knock off's of them aswell I saw the other day.  I guess when it comes retrieve...........think like a shrimp.  A few twitches during a retrieve would be my guess.  You could also rig curl tail grubs from any of the manufacturers so the curl tail points down.  I guess the biggest key is trying to match the hatch when it comes to colours etc.  '

What a sight that Toga must've been!

Good luck hope you get amongst them.

Cheers
Colin

Mate I'd be givin a surface lure a go like the Rebel Pop R or the River to Sea Bubble Pop. I've had great results on Sooties and Jungle Perch with them, and the bigger Bubble Pops should handle a 'Toga.
Cheers mate,
John

cheers lads,
Nothing at all was interested in poppers today unfortunately :-(
That zerek lure looks awesome! Didn't think to just use a single tailed grub softy but, will give it a go next time.

If the shrimp were 'flicking' around on top, try a small walk the dog style lure...work it with small but quick twitches like the shrimp are.
