Title: Yamaha 2008 50hp 4 stroke
Post by: PC on January 17, 2013, 05:49:38 AM
Hi guys
Just your thoughts needed
I have the opportunity of purchasing the above motor at a good price
My concern is that the motor was used everyday in saltwater and never flushed
What's your thoughts

It sounds like it could be a pro fisher's boat and that could mean some very high hours as well.  Unless it was a very bargain basement price I'd look elsewhere.

No it's a private guy has many hours at all uses it in Sydney going from the shore to a small island in the harbour
And it is a bargain

See if you can take it for a run, then determine your choice on how it performs.

I will be taking a run in it Saturday morning but I have to travel. 650klms to check it out, my main concern is rust in the motor itself is there anything I can do to check
As I said it is used daily

Rust will show on steel parts.  Corrosion on aluminium should be you biggest concern.  The bit you can't see will be the worst, inside the water jackets in block.  It's a lucky dip for something that has been sitting in the salt for 4 or 5 years.

A new 50hp will set you back around $10k maybe work out the worst case scenario and the cost of a fix up. If it comes out significantly less than replacement cost it may be worth a look. But I'd be worried if it had sat in the salt for 4 years and no flush. You need to check and see if there was a water trap fitted to the boat too. Water in fuel is hard on the injectors.

If you dont know what you are looking at, pay someone to look at it for you. There should be a mobile mechanic that can look at it for you, it will cost approx $150 Cheap if you consider what some repairs can cost. Get some one to look at it before you travel, will save alot of fuel too

Decided to leave the motor, spoke to head mechanic at Blakes Yamaha in Sydney, he strongly suggested to go no where near it, would have been a lot of heart ache :youbeauty
