Surroundings
« on: March 22, 2014, 05:21:14 PM »
I have been fishing the Severn River over the past few months and thought I'd share some photo's of the local surroundings.
The fishing has been good with just the average sizes for that neck of the woods being landed.
There's no kayak or canoe needed but you do put in a lot of kilometres just to have a fish.

We all fish in different area's so it would be good to see other area's where people fish (no need to mention the place, just a photo).

Thanks

Hi Jason,

Stunning pictures mate, I love that country.

I'm not asking where you're going, but something that could help others is an idea of the gear you take on your gorge walking.

What sort of distances do you think your covering in a days fishing, assuming you're using a base camp & walking away & back each day?

Cheers,

Cheers,
This time of year with the river so low you do a fair bit of walking.
We did about a 12k round trip (in a day) from our campsite last time we were there, it's fairly taxing on the legs as you are walking on a dry rocky river bed.
Some of the pools you come across are only about 100m long and 2k apart.
The gear I take is normally just a backpack with the obvious essentials, two rods (just in case one breaks), mobile phone (or something that can give a signal), decent footwear and an offsider.
I have been enjoying it lately, it's just something different from lugging the kayak around all day.

This is touching on another love of mine, photography, I will see what I can dig up.

If I had not spent so much on fishing gear I would have a good camera by now.

Would love to do a walk from the Ballandean end of the park through to the Broadwater. It is hard going on the legs & knees in that country & you need plenty of water, it gets bloody hot in those gorges. Care should be taken drinking the water from the river in no flow situations due to the presence of Arsenic mines in the Sundown area.

Cheers Andrew

Found a few pics of some favourite gorge water. There's something to be said about the reward of a fish after climbing over miles of boulders like busses to fish one little hole.

Get's pretty flogged these days, but there's still the odd big cod still there for sure.
