NEWS –
Jindabyne anglers fishing the Snowy Mountains Trout Festival experienced mixed fishing conditions due to strong winds but the shore based anglers did quite well with some big rainbows caught on both scrub worms and mudeyes.
The biggest rainbow caught out of Lake Jindabyne over the weekend weighed in at 3.8 lbs cleaned and we are currently catching some of the biggest rainbow trout in years!
Brown trout up to 7lb have also been caught using local scrub worms.
With fine warm weather predicted for the rest of the week it’s time to grab a rod and get onto the water.
My 25th Anniversary Fishing Competition is being held on this Saturday 8th November and it looks like it will be a fine weekend with temperatures up to 30 degrees so it will be very pleasant on the water after what we experienced last weekend.
Let’s have a look at what we can expect over the coming week but please note there is not a lot of change.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
Water temperatures on the lake have risen very slightly on the surface due to the sunny warm days and sits at about 13 degrees C.
Best methods to catch a trout.
Best method – Bait is still going well but trolling deeper is also very good.
Best lake lure –Back to using brown bomber and holographicTasmanian Devils.
Best lake area – Creel Bay, Rushes Bay and Lion and Cub Islands.
Best fly method lake – Hamills Killer, Black Woolly Bugger and Williamson’s Goldfish.
Best River Fly Fishing– Black or brown weighted nymphs on the Thredbo River.
Stream fly fishing – Rain in the mountains Saturday make fishing difficult early this week.
Best River Lures – Rapala type minnows get them down and fish them slowly.

Trolling.
It still has been a bit mixed with trolling last week with the trout still on the move.
Trout are being caught from the surface to 35 feet and there is no real pattern at the moment.
If trolling, start the day (before the sun hits the water) with a surface line out and at least 50 metres drop back, the more the better on still sunny days. Stay close to the shore and target rocky points and other snags like the many trees in the water at the moment for the bigger brown trout.
Later in the morning, try lead line at 2 to 3 colours. (20 to 30 metres of line out) later in the day or on still days and even downriggers to 30 feet.
Best colour Tassies have been holographic, Brown Bomber, green and gold yellowing type. Rapalas that look similar to our goldfish and spotted dog pattern have still been very successful.
Little bit of downrigging at 20 to 30 feet on the bright sunny days. Use longer dropbacks for best results.

Lake Bait Fishing
(Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Industry and Investment NSW (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAIT FISH in the RIVERS!)
Shore based bait fishing continues to be good with local Scrubbies, and artificial baits the best. The mudeye fishing should start shortly with a bit of warmer weather.
The Claypits, Hatchery Bay, Town Centre near front of Banjo Patterson Park and The Snowy Arm are better spots.

Lake Spinning
No change in the lure spinning. Same lures are still working but like the trolling most lures will work ok if you’re in the right place for an aggressive trout. Blades in gold have been doing well at the moment. Try a sall
The Tasmanian Devil Holographic, Pink, orange, Y82 and Y48 have all been good and so is the Holographic.
Minnow lures like floating Rapalas, (especially jointed Rapalas), Stumpjumpers and other minnow style lure in either natural rainbow trout and brown trout patterns or gold colours to represent the Jindabyne goldfish that the trout love to chase and eat. Warlock lure in greenish colours and work it slowly through the shallows.
Don’t stay in one place too long and only put in a couple of casts in each area.
Shallow areas try Gillies Feathertails and Tailwalkers which are new products worth a look.
Some new lures to try in the dark are the new glow Blue Fox Vibrax spinners. Charge them up with a torch or camera flash and watching them spin through the water is incredible, trout are very inquisitive and often hit the lure hard.
Call into my shop and I will show you some of the better soft plastics that we are having great success on over the last week. The ‘Spotted Brew’ Strike Tiger has especially been good over the last week.

River Spinning
The Thredbo was a little bit up and down with the levels and the fishing this week with the cold deeper water and making it a little hard to see fish at times. Friday the river was well up after the storms on Saturday night made fishing difficult but better today.
You had to work the snags and the lures needed to get down and were best worked very slow in the very cold and quite often faster water. I would expect after the rain and snow the river will become a little stained and the spinning should be great.
Looking like a great season ahead.

Fly fishing Rivers and Streams
Thredbo is still producing big rainbows up to 5lb but it’s been hard to see fish after the rain and storms.
The best of the river fishing is yet to come.

Fly Fishing Lake
Woolley Bugger, a Craig’s Night time or a Williamson’s Goldfish will be the best over the next. Back to better weather by the weekend and even may see a little late evening dry fly on the lake. With the warm days we have been getting flying ant and termite hatches and so you may find an area where the fish are jumping around sunset, just depends on where the ant hatch is.
Have you any photos that you can e-mail me?
I can use the information to add into my own reports and your photo might not only end up in my report but might also go into a draw for the best fish of the month which will win you a $50 Tassie Devil Tackle Pack.
