Reminder – new life jacket stowage rules for boaties
« on: May 17, 2012, 07:36:23 PM »
I don't recall this being mentioned recently, so I thought I'd remind everyone boating on Qld waters about new regulations regarding signage for life jacket stowage.

http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/About-us/N...t-stowage.aspx

I called into Qld Transport this arvo to get the good oil and spent some time trying to find commercially manufactured stickers for signage as many chandlery shops and tackle shops don't stock them yet.

I did find that BCF Maroochydore stock them in three sizes.

Cheers Dave

Best way to stow a lifejacket is to have it wrapped around ya. Save lotsa stress looking for stickers that tells you where it is.
Cheers John.

Yep good point John, however if you were fishing in North Queensland on smooth waters in 38 deg heat with 90% humidity, a life jacket would be the last thing I'd want wrapped around me, trying to fish all day.

Thanks Dave, I hear that the "educate rather than prosecute" period is nearly over

I visit ALOT of marine chandlery stores but  virtually none have stickers available (contrarty to MSQ'd statement), managed to get one from a tackle store, go figure.... The stickers don't stay on carpet for long, was gone when I got to the lake. So to tick the boxes I simply threw the required number of PFDs on the floor of the boat so that they were visible.

Fitzy,

Try laminating the sticker or a home made sign and then put velcro dots on the back.  Sticks very well to deck carpet...

Cheers

Pete

There must be thousands and thousands of boat owners in Qld who have no idea of the new regulations.  I admit I knew nothing of them until I read this post.  It seems strange that all registered boat owners didn't get a letter in the mail advising the changes.

Good point Dale! I didn't even hear it advertised on radio or on the TV.

I too visited a number of shops in toowoomba to find a sticker and i ended up having to go to a graphics place and get one made. I also replaced most of my life jackets as they didnt meet the new guidelines. Fisheries had advised me on a recent check mine didnt meet the standards. Pissed me off as i had only bought them a couple months prior.

I sent an email to Marine Safety Qld and they sent me 2 stickers. After all they provide free capacity stickers and epirb and flare expiry so should be the same for the life jacket signage.
Fitzy you may have to get custom printed door mat to put on your carpet.
 Cheers
Ray

Water Skiers Warehouse had them in stock a couple of months ago - realy simple, just "lifejacket" in small red lettering and an arrow.

Good point Dave,
I was pulled up by the Water Police today on the Herbert River near Lucinda and they checked me over but no mention was made of labels. They are on sale in some tackle shops up here for around $5.00. A bit steep I thought.
Cheers,
John
