SunWater was today fined $80,000 in the Rockhampton Industrial Magistrates Court in connection to a fatality that occurred at Bedford Weir in November 2008.

SunWater was fined after it entered a guilty plea to an amended complaint issued by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland in respect to the incident.

SunWater Chief Executive Peter Boettcher said SunWater acknowledges the tragedy of this incident and as always, the safety of our workers, our customers and the community is SunWater's first priority.

“Our thoughts and condolences remain with the family of Nelani Koefer,” said Mr Boettcher.

Nelani Koefer drowned when an inflatable section of the Bedford Weir near Blackwater, about 200 kilometres west of Rockhampton, collapsed and released thousands of mega litres of water into the river where the young girl was swimming as her family picnicked nearby.
