Hop Along to Hook some Big Dam Catches this Easter

This Easter, head inland to a stocked impoundment for some ‘dam’ good fishing action.

Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme (SIPS) dams are thriving at the moment as a result of high productivity in most dams and near capacity fish stocking by community groups in recent years.

Fisheries Queensland recreational fishing manager Tony Ham said recent reports of big catches saw major advantages for those who currently held, or were looking to buy, permits.

“Some great catches of Australian bass are being reported from southeast Queensland dams,” he said.

“At Maroon Dam, anglers have been rewarded with catches of up to 20 bass in a session.

“Also, some bass are being taken on surface lures which makes for exciting visuals of bass strikes.”

Mr Ham said dams in the central, west and north of the state were boasting catches just as good as their southern counterparts.

“Some consistent catches of golden perch and Murray cod are being reported at western Queensland SIPS dams,” he said.

“At Glenlyon Dam, anglers have been rewarded with consistent Murray cod fishing and some real big fish amongst the catches.

“One fish, which was released after landing, was reported at over the 110cm maximum size.

“Some big barra will also be available over Easter at the central and northern SIPS dams before the water temperature cools in winter and makes catching barra a little trickier.”

Buying a permit means you will be helping to sustain native fish stocks, with 75 per cent of the funds from your permit going back into the restocking of SIPS dams.

Weekly permits cost just $36.05 for one year or $32.40 for concession card holders, and a weekly permit costs $7.20.

To purchase your permit to fish at any of the 32 dams on the scheme, visit www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.
