Maroon Dam Fishing Well
« on: July 14, 2013, 10:10:19 PM »
The bass have been on in good numbers at Maroon Dam.  They are definitely getting bigger in there.  The Bluefin Lake Maroon Fishing Classic should produce interesting results later in the year.

Are they eager to take lures, or are they getting them mostly on shrimp? If lures, what depth and techniques are working? I'm thinking of heading out there next weekend and a little bit of knowledge beforehand would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi sports, does this comp support the stocking group or some charity or local community group ? had a look at your website and could not see any info.

Is there anywhere up towards the timbered part of the dam that one can launch a kayak from? By that I mean a "day use" area that doesn't require you to be staying at Camp Lake Fire or such. I've only launched from the area to the left of the public boat ramp at the opposite end of the dam. It would be nice if I can launch up the other end to escape the ski lice easily, and be in the timber quickly.

$5 at either of the camp grounds usually gets me day access, only downside is you can't launch early (someone has to be awake to be paid). To avoid that, I usually ring day before and organise something.. But lately just been launching at the ramp, never had much luck in the timber there.

Hi Elops, it is a privately run comp, and I think that is why industry is right behind it.  There were more prizes added to the list yesterday.

I think he was asking; are the local fish restocking group going to be given funds from the proceeds of the comp to put more fish into the lake or is it a private comp just to fill your campgrounds for a weekend (you are the beneficiary)?

No, there are no charities linked to this comp.  A local Boonah charity was offered the catering but they weren't interested in the job.  In hindsight, probably a good thing.  A professional catering group has now been booked, so it should help the overall success of the event.  Everyone who fishes the comp will require a SIPS permit, so funds will go back into the stocking of the dam.  The comp is catch & release.  SIPs figures for this past financial year aren't out yet, but I noticed they went from $9802 to $15743 for the last financial year...it will be interesting to see what the 2012/13 figure is.  So having a place like Camp Lake Fire creating a fishing friendly environment is a good thing for the Scenic Rim and for everyone who wants to fish Maroon Dam.

SIPS allocations have been out for some time. Maroon received $8268
Interested to know how much SEQ Water charged for you for the permit to run this event. Though being a commercial operator can understand if you are unwilling to disclose this.

We heard the same when ABT kicked off....."catch & release = no impact"... , they soon realised it was quite unpopular with restocking groups and so began making a donation for each competitor to the local fish stocking group. My advice is you should do at least the same.

That's a bit of a stretch isn't it?  Without the local stocking group you'd have nothing.

The stocking is certainly an interesting topic. Personally, I wouldn't mind if I caught a small bass every now and then.

For those interested in commercial permits through SEQWater, that information is not hard to acquire.  In initial discussions with SEQWater about the comp, they were very keen to support it because it has been years since anyone has done anything there.  I think it's a good opportunity to promote the Scenic Rim.

Nice side stepping of the questions, but they still remains.  Will the competition organisers be making a donation to the Volunteer Stocking Group who are the people who make this fishery what it is?
Did SEQWater charge you a fee for running this Competition?  (They charge ABT $500 per competition on Somerset)

Simple Yes or No answers will be fine.
