River Session
« on: December 08, 2012, 05:23:51 AM »
It had been a couple of weeks since I had fished the Bremer with the last time being a bit slow due to the rain and rubbish in the water. The water was a lot better yesterday with plenty of bait fish swimming around but still a bit dirty. I launched the kayak just after 12 so I knew I would have to find some dark spots if I was to have any luck.
I set my lure up (favorite homemade black deep diver) and had a cast to check the setting on the baitcaster and landed in a perfect spot when my lure was smashed, unfortunately the fish won the battle and kept my lure. The first hour was not good with several hook ups getting off so I reduced the drag settings and was finally rewarded with a nice bass over 35cm. I only landed three for the session with all being caught on the homemades which is always a buz.

I have started to notice a couple of the bass with red sores on them over the last few trips, but apart from that they appear quite healthy. Will it cause much damage to them in the long term?

Possibly anchor worm or similar parasite. Won't hurt them much normally. Is a common occurance, often associated with poor water quality. Only seems to become an issue if the fish get stressed or in very poor condition....

Nice going. Good to hear the water's a bit better. Has been very dirty the last few times I went out. Was wondering about those red spots too. Just notice it on the bass every now and then. Good that it's not too serious.

We got a dozen yesterday, up to 42cm, a couple had fin rot and red sores too. I am guessing something to do with the pressure they are getting in the fishing side of things. That was the first time I had been out there for a while!
