Dropped a couple of DIY gutter guard bait traps in Hinze Dam with a few bones, another with soap for bait, after looking at suggestions on google.
To date after lifting and looking a couple of times have only got striped grunter and other small unknown fish to about 30mm length.
The target is get some shrimp for bait to give them a whirl for bass or yellabelly.
Appreciate any suggestions for best bait to put in the trap, and hints re preferred locations in relation to water depth.

Chicken necks are great. Very cheap, only 3 or 4 dollars a kilo. Easy to get in and out of traps and work well.

I use the cheapest dry dog pellets that i can buy doesnt seem to matter what flavour. Location wise the closer to the bank the better 12 inches of water is ok. Never had any success with soap and it has too many nasties in it. Any small gudgeons or rainbows will catch bass.

Put the traps near weed or rocks if possible. Eater depth not critical.
Dog pellets, fish frames, soap etc etc all good.

Made a couple of traps after meeting rayke at the ramp a few months ago and having a yarn about construction. He forgot to say gutter guard is like a razor blade when making one :OMG
Only built them recently, and quite a challenge initially setting a couple from the kayak, but OK now.
Just have to convert to catching a fish on bait now, when the lures and bass are not cooperating

Bumped into rayke1938 at the dam today, and am taking this chance to say how generous he has been with advice with the shrimp trap caper, very much appreciated Ray.
Also shows the benefit of being a Sweetwater forum member as well, after reading the other replies in this thread.

Pity about the fecal brained person who raided some of my pots ,left them open and threw away the bait traps . Apart from that we had a slowish day with limited bait but ended up with 14 bass a couple of yellas and 7 tandans,

Shame about the traps. 3 nice fish. If I could pick one to eat it would be the jew (catfish), followed closely by the bass. What do you think?

I very rarely eat fish from the fresh had my first one for 5 years last month. Smoked a yella and enjoyed it.I have a couple of Asian mates and they prefer the tandans.

Re the eating qualities of the freshwater fish, my mum who is in her 80's now, thinks Bass are the best of all fish to eat. Yellowbelly are great also, as long as you remove the fat strips near the fins and in the belly region.
Try grilling the fillets (skinless), cooking both sides, then putting a sprinkle of course black pepper on them, thin slices of cheese (I like Maasdam or Jarlsburg) and lots of very thinly sliced garlic over the cheese. Put them back under the grill until the garlic slivers start to brown and the cheese cooks and then - YUM!

Caught the tail end of a cooking program this morning with Maggie Beer who was cooking carp and interviewing a pro netter . He ices them down immediately and he gets top price in the markets. Maggie skinned them and says absolutely no muddy taste. She says if yo skin all freshwater fish you will not get any off flavors..
Might have to try iceing down a carp to try. I have eaten carp overseas and it was very good.

Bear with me on this.
Was heading out to Maroon and had a good supply of el cheap dog biscuits which generally work well for shrimp. On the way I stopped at the Yatala pie shop and being a "Pie Pig" I got myself a Pie & Peas (Yummo) and since the missus wasn't with me I got a sausage roll too. But alas, after pigging out on the pie, I could only shove down half the sausage roll. The remaining half stayed in the bag for the trip to Maroon.
When I was setting the shrimp traps that evening (about 60cm of water just next to the weeds) I thought what the heck, so I shoved a chunk of the Yatala Pie Shop sausage roll into the bait area.
Well the next morning it was obvious. Doggie Biscuits - 6 to 8 shrimp. Sausage Roll - 15+ shrimp. Results were repeated that night.
Since then I just go to Aldi and use "Party Sausage Rolls". They work just as good
