Red alert removed in the Lower Darling River at Tapio

The Sunraysia Regional Algal Coordinating Committee today removed the red alert warning for toxic blue green algae in the lower Darling River at Tapio, that was issued on 17 October 2014.
Sunraysia RACC Chair, Owen Russell, said sampling now indicated that there were very low levels of blue green algae meaning that this alert can now be lifted.
Mr Russell said that this water was now fit for recreational purposes including stock watering, but advised that drinking water should always be taken from a potable supply.
The NSW Office of Water will continue to monitor for blue green algae and warned that people should remain vigilant and keep away from visible scums and water that has a musty or septic odour.
Information updates about blue-green algae blooms and red level warning areas can be obtained from the Regional Algal Coordinating Committee freecall Algal Information Hotline on 1800 999 457.
