Myself and a few mates fished a location on the upper Clarence River over the last few days. We were blown away by the clarity of the water, and the number of Eastern Cod we came across. We fished from 2 kayaks and a canoe and the river was really at it's best. No massive fish were caught but the bass fought extremely well as Clarence Bass always do and the Cod were a worthwhile by catch. The number of Cod in the upper Clarence is amazing and it looks really good for the future of this great fish that was almost extinct not so long ago. If ever you need to cite an example of a successful restocking program; think Eastern Cod.

I think the cod closed season, protection and natural recruitment are all big contributors to the recovery of Easterns as well John :thumbsup

Trout cod recovery is another good example. :tick In places these fish have recovered that well they are deemed to be a pest....go figure..
A shame that the Mary River Cod program has fallen in a heap. Another example of Qld dragging the chain..... :X

I think you're right there Jim, the other factor is that the Clarence is in far far better condition than the Richmond. If I was a Cod I know which river I'd rather be in. The impetus begun by Project Big Fish was a huge factor as well, and it began in the Clarence. In some ways Fisheries was almost shamed into getting into the act.
Maybe they need a Big Fish Project in Qld?

We need to revitalise project Big Fish in NSW for the Richmond too John ! I know lots of half established Eastern Cod populatioons in the Richmond basin that are just going to whither on the vine unless there is some additional stocking /translocation to get the populations over the critical minimum size they need to suceed :-\

I think you're right about that Jim, As usual here the biggest problem is water quality and riparian vegetation. But I'd be interested in working on it with you.

Will be talking to some guys who are involved with the program this week. Will ask about what's happening on the Richmond from their perspective....

I'd like to hear that Fitzy, there doesn't seem to be much happening that's obvious around here at the moment.
