Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing Report. For the week starting March 17th 2014
By Steve Williamson. – Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing Adventures. Shop -02 64561551

NEWS –
A very windy weekend kept boats off the lake and so not much to update there only that while the first part of last week was a little quite the last part way very good so long as you trolled deep as far as 45 feet.
Bait anglers were doing it tough at the start of the week but over the weekend there were good reports on anglers with bait under a float in the windy conditions and so good rainbows were caught.
Fly fishing on the streams and rivers was good at the start of the week but too windy once again over the weekend.
Lure guys were doing much better on the lake casting heavier lures into the wind and letting them sink for a while before retrieving. The cool change is about to hit so we are looking at colder mornings down to as low as 5 degrees at the start of this week and days up to early 20’s before warming up again towards the end of the week with temperatures back up in the high 20’s making it perfect weather for trout fishing.

NEWS.
It’s only 6 weeks now to the Rapala Discover Holiday parks Family Fishing Competition and we have started to take early entries now but we are quickly running out of Early Entry Sponsors Packs worth more than $50 so if you want one you have better get an early entry form from us and get it in quick. More information can be found on my web site.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
The lake level has been steady and is about 81%
The Lake temperature today was 18 degrees C on the surface and will start to drop slowly now.
Best methods to catch a trout. – Not a lot of change yet!
Best method – Trolling by boat using downriggers to 45 feet and lead core lines at 3 colours early in the day.
Best lake lure – For spinning try a Willy’s Special number 111 Tasmanian Devil and let it sink before retrieving.
Best lake area – Sheltered bays with deep dropoffs.
Best fly method lake – Williamson’s Goldfish (Plenty being caught in yabby nets so they are about)
Best River Fly Fishing– Still some dry fly fishing with hoppers and Crickets about now.
Best River Lures – Small spinners into the faster runs or a 5cm CD Rapala used the same way.
Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next week.

Trolling.
With the cooler weather this week we will start the morning off with a surface line and one line with 3 colours of lead core line. After the first hour of light your best with leadlines and downriggers. In the middle of the day we have been using downriggers and still catching trout down at about 50 feet. 35 feet is about perfect if you just want to downrigg early.
The Tasmanian Devil number 111 “Willy’s Special’ or my Black/ Gold are still about the best Tasmanian Devil colours at the moment followed by the yellowing brown bomber. Best Rapala colours are rainbow trout and brown trout at the moment. With water levels still high, some of the better trolling areas this month will be Hatchery Bay and Hayshed Bay and Sid’s Bay through to Rushes Bay however watch the rocks as the East Jindabyne Islands start to reappear as the water levels drop.
Yes we do hire leadlines and downriggers!

Lake Bait Fishing
(Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Industry and Investment NSW (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAIT FISH in the RIVERS!)
Worms under a float or fished of the bottom with an artificial bait dropper is the best way to catch a trout at the moment. While you’re waiting for a bite, why don’t you try to catch a few yabbys? An entre of yabby is delicious and there are plenty about at the moment if you pick the right spots. Don’t forget enclosed traps are illegal, so you can only use lift nets. Come into my shop and we can set you up and tell you the best spots at the moment for yabbys.
Best bait fishing areas are Creel Bay, Hatchery Bay and Curiosity Rocks. Another great area is the bottom of Discovery Holiday Park near Widows Creek Inlet.

Lake Spinning
The early morning is your best bet to catch a trout with the best lures using small 7 gram Tassie devils or flicking floating Spotted Dog Rapalas and most lures that look like goldfish.
Best areas have been down at the South Arm, Hatchery Bay or near Banjo Patterson Park.

River Spinning.
Small Rapalas in the floating variety with the best colours being rainbow trout and perch. Small bladed spinners, like the Gillies Feathertails or Celtas in numbers one or two sizes will be also worth a try. For deeper water the Rapala CD5 Spotted Dog or Gillies Tailbender. Best fishing are coming from the faster runs if you can get a lure deep enough.

Fly Fishing Lake
Try any of the streamer patterns such as Mrs Simpson and Williamson’s Snowy Mountains Gold Fish. Olive green nymphs and shrimp patterns are also worth a try.
You may get an evening rise after a sunny day but to date they have been few and far between on the lake.
The South Arm, Creel Bay and Kangaroo Bay (if you have a boat) are all great for fishing at the moment.
Fly fishing Rivers and Streams
The Alpine streams are still at their best and plenty of small fish are being caught on dry fly.
Fly selection is not too critical in these streams but placement is critical or else you just scare all the fish.
Flies you must have are brown beetle patterns, Snowy Hopper, Stimulator, Royal Wulff and Parachute hoppers. Maybe a brown and a black nymph if the fish are not rising and a white moth or white Wulff
And maybe you had better throw a midge pattern, brown mayfly and an Adams in as well to make certain you have most circumstances covered.
Yes 2014 is the 25th anniversary of my business and we are going to celebrate!
