I've just been informed that Somerset Regional Council are tomorrow voting to close the bridges on the Billies Bay / Hayes Landing road.

If this motion is passed, this will mean an end to all boat access to the northern side of Lake Wivenhoe.

I urge everyone to telephone and email all of the Somerset Regional Councillors asking them to keep this important access point open.

The clock is ticking, time is of the essence. Please make an effort to keep this important boating and fishing access point open.

I have emailed all the Councillors and reposted this on a few web sites and Facebook pages.  I have already had replies from a Councillor.  It doesn't look good at the moment.  We need lots and lots of people to contact Councillors.  It's almost as if the Somerset Council don't want tourism.

Let me guess. A knee jerk reaction to that guy getting bashed there? Maybe they are worried about a lawsuit?

What do they have to gain by closing access? Has the sailing club given up their lease? Or are they just getting booted out?

Too many questions and not enough answers.

They don't want to spend $43k on bridge maintenance so they're voting on shutting the bridge to save the coin.

I recon there's possibly some politics at play here......

SRC want better access to Wivenhoe that's no secret, preferably with outboard motors being permitted. They'd like Billies Bay open to the public again as opposed to lease hold to Sailing Club members only & this might be a roll of the dice to pressure SEQWater to do just that. I'm guessing it may be a case of "well if there's no public access to Hayes/Billies why spend the money on maintaining a road to nowhere so we will shut the road & that means to your (SEQWater) vehicles as well. But if it (Billies / Hayes) IS open to the public, we would happily maintain the bridge/road"

I would be asking SRC to delay any final decision on the future of the bridge & commit to maintaining the bridge until SEQWater releases the recreation master plan due for release in Feb 2013.

Interesting fun with figure's...It 's approx $40,000 in cost for a temporary repairs to both bridge's that will only last 1 to 2 years and another $3000 for signage for a lower weight limit, to replace the bridges to council's standards it will cost approx $500,000 so are you all happy for the council to charge people who wish to use the bridge's..?

3 grand for a sign to change the weight limit.  Get real.

As for paying to use the bridge, I use lots of bridges on my way to work each day, I don't pay to use any of them directly.  It's not the Gateway we're talking about.  I pay my rediculously high rates and water charges every year, this is what my Council should be using the money for.  This is just another classic example of the Somerset Regional Council disregarding any importance in Tourism.  Let's just reserve all the area for the cow cockies.  The Council have money in the bank, they have not spent all the flood recovery money yet and they definately haven't spent much on roads in the general area.  Take a trip down Pine Mountain Road or Claus Road to see how much they've invested since the floods.

It would be interesting to see a cost comparison between fixing the bridges with a reduced carrying capacity and closing the bridges.
Knowing this Council, and if they've said it's $3000 for a weight limit sign, I can't imagine the cost of bollards, road closed signs and all the other beauracratic garbarge they'll have to go through to close the bridges.  I'd guess close to a million will be spent removing the bridges.
