Lockyer Creek - Australia Day paddle
« on: January 26, 2012, 12:46:51 PM »
Went for a morning paddle with Novice (Dave) & Flic down the Lockyer Creek from the bridge at Lowood down to O'Rielly's Weir and back.

Distance is just on 4km and is a leisurely hour paddle each way if you take the time to look at the wild life or flick the odd lure.

Water was a bit dirty today, running a few inches over the weir, so we didn't expect to catch much & fished accordingly (maybe 20 casts between us). Ran into a local with a tinnie in under the bridge who has caught a few Eel Tailed Catfish this morning and had reported catching some bass recently.

From the top side of the weir we saw a few locals with long poles and alveys fishing off the bottom side of thr weir. In the few minutes we loitered at top we saw them land a couple of Fork-Tailed Catfish (aka Power Tails).

We didn't paddle upstream from the bridge, however Novice has been up there before & has posted pictures here previously.

In a nutshell, we didn't catch anything, but hardly fished. Enjoyed the company paddling some pretty water with lots of birdlife. Also noted the odd bit of waterways abuse by landowner dumping their rubbish down the banks and soil errosion from cattle caving in the banks (another one for the shame files). Will post some pictures to update this topic.

Thanks for the invite Dave.  :thumbsup

Sounds like a nice day. I'm getting stir crazy myself, going to sneak out on to north pine dam tomorrow for a lure throwing session (wont say fishing session coz its been at least 12 months since I caught a fish on a lure there), launch at 6am hang around until it gets to sticky then come home.
