Blue-green algae all clear for Bray Park Weir

The recent outbreak of blue-green algae reported in Bray Park Weir has almost dissipated.
"The algal levels currently being recorded indicate that the water is safe for recreational use," the Chair of the Regional Algal Co-ordinating Committee, David Basso said today.
“The recent cloudy weather and sporadic rainfall and a drop in water temperature have not been ideal conditions for the algae to bloom.”
"Over summer the chance of algal blooms increases with high temperatures and run-off from storms that can create the ideal conditions for blue-green algae to increase in numbers."
Although Bray Park Weir is spilling, Tweed Shire Council will still be treating the potable water supply until there is a good flush of water over the weir.
"Although the blue-green algae is not a concern in Bray Park Weir at present, water users are reminded to remain vigilant and to report sightings of blooms."
Blue-green algae can reappear at any time so water users should check to see if the warning signs are present and if there are any visible signs of algae in the water before entering water.
“Blue-green algae scums can vary from thick paint-like accumulations at water surfaces to small green floating dots or general discoloration of the water, and are generally associated with a strong musty or earthy odour,” Mr Basso said.
Information about blue-green algae blooms is available from the freecall Algal Information Hotline 1800 999 457 or visit the NSW Office of Water website - www.water.nsw.gov.au/algal alerts.
Tweed Shire Council is constantly monitoring Bray Park Weir and it is advised that the public heed the many warning signs put up by Council when blue-green algae is present. The current algal status is also updated on Councils web site, http://www.tweed.nsw.gov.au, as information comes to hand.Sorry, only registered users can see this content. Please Login or Register.
