just got back from wivenhoe with 6 good redclaw.I put 8 pots in but some kind person helped themselves to two of them. Lots of small ones

had the pots in overnight but as only new to this activity was happy with the outcome

Could well have had hundreds i your pots, but if a share farmer hit your pots before you do, you'll never know.
It pays to only have your traps out only while you're there or take the risk. Besides, IMHO a trap left overnight is abandoned & deserves to get pulled out of the water & tossed up the shore due to threats to non-target, air breathing species that can drown in them ie water rats, tortoises, platypus.

A little trick a mate tried with the Oprah House pots was to cut out small circles of tinplate or plastic to make doors for his pots. Inside of course. Hinged at the top with a very small zip tie. They can swim out as well.
He doubled his take of red claw. Not just luck as he was camping with others at the time and all were sticking to 4 pots each and he didn't let on until he had tested it out.
As for worrying about the share farmers, sit down and think on that for a minute. . . .
There is a way to make it so they will not see your pots. . . .

Fair suck of the Sav Fitzy, thats a bit extreme. Most joints the redclaw catch from an overnight soak is much higher than a few hours during the day.
Very few pots around now that are a genuine threat to other species. a 50mm restriction does the job.
