Orange Creek Weir - Dawson River. Qld

This weir is just outside of Cracow in the Dawson River. Can catch Saratoga, Dawson strain Golden Perch & Fork-Tailed Catfish (Powertails). Often very dirty, the fishing can be quite good, or quite bad depending on water levels & flow. Upstream is some unique cycad palms that have survived in the area since before the last ice age.

Also upstream is the proposed Nathan Dam on the Nathan Gorge. Water is gold & ironically its the gold mines that want the water.... Guess you know my thooughts on the idea of damming this river....  :walkplank

Interesting how that one is made Fitz, is that timber slats over concrete or earth?

Cheers

It looks like its timber frame, filled with concrete & they left the timber there when finished. Has character.  :)

It makes a good boat ramp when there's none for around for miles.

cheers,

fitz..

interesting pictures them. the oldman yous to live in wandoan and fished the dawson a lot as a kid. Talked a lot about the nathan and the isla(not sure of spelling) gorges. There was caves full of aboriginal paintings and artifacts back then late 60s. Also his father and  grandfather worked on propertiesaround taroom early 1900s till late 70s namely hornet bank and brundah stations. Its a great area and it would be a pity to see it all damed but i suppose that it is progress. Just wondering if any body has fished the  Glebe wier out of taroom. If you have from what i have been told the toilet block there will be many meters under water when the Nathan dam is full. The glebe was allways a good spot downstream to bob out a few yellas on worms when i was a kid and still is today. Thanks again for the pictures and the memories as the oldman is still alive and kicking but pop died about 12years ago so it was good to think of those days again. :thanks

Hi Fitzy,
I am only a new member and I want to congratulate you on such a great website.

I am also thinking about heading down and having a fish in the Dawson near Cracow.
Can you give me some help regarding fishing the river with lures?
Do you troll hardbodies or flick them at snags, use spinnerbaits or softplastics?
I was just curious as to how the fish respond to lures in such dirty water, do they still find and strike artificals considering the limited visibility? Should I just bait fish instead?

Thanks for your help

Regards
Adrian

Not sure about the yellas. But the saratoga are the go on small surface lures and frog imitations. Try the backwaters early and late out of the flow if its still running. Great spot out that way. Good luck. Dont forget to post on return.

G'Day Adrian,

I fish fly alot when up the Dawson, but have caught Saratoga on Buzz Baits, Spinnerbaits, suspender lures, plastics and hard bodies.

Similar to what DD said, fish the backwaters, under overhanging trees & around snags if there's a flow. If no flow they can be out & about anywhere, particularly if there's no wind & around sunup/ sundown.

If its flowing it can be too dirty for fishing. That being the case, just enjoy the location & the scenery or go throw spinners down the rapids for yellowbelly.

Cheers,

fitzy..

Thanks for the replies,

I ended up going to the Isaacs and nailed a few Toga last weekend.
I still can't get my head around how I am going to catch fish on lures in the really dirty water around where I live. I was thinking I may need to use lures with rattles in them so they alert the fish to my lures prescence. I also thought I would try a lure with a strong wobble so hopefully the vibrations will attract the fish. The Nogoa river flows through Emerald where I live and it is constantly dirty, I take the kids down and we bait fish with good results although I am keen to try and catch a few on lures. Your thoughts on fishing with lures in dirty water and your experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Adrian

Hey pilly,

When im fishing dirty water around the mary i tend to keep to spinnerbaits. they give off huge amounts of vibration, not to mention its basically the go to lure for me when the water is dirty. Just remember to put gold blades on your spinnerbait, i think it helps anyway. Dont worry to much about the color of the skirt, at least thats what i think. as the fish will see/feel the blades first, the skirt would be the last thing i would imagine them to see.
