Minn Kota Riptide Foot Pedal Problems
« on: January 26, 2012, 05:40:11 PM »
In as many years I have had to replace the foot pedal on my RT/AP 55 bow mounted Minn Kota Riptide, this will be my fourth pedal. The first time I had a quote to fix the problem, however found that it was cheaper to just buy a new one. This particular pedal I have now won't turn right on occations with others I've owned in the past having other complications.

Has anyone had the same problems with this earlier model foot pedal and have you had any success fixing the circuit board. It's a pretty simple process to pull the pedal apart, but I'm increasingly getting frustrated with the continual replacement issue. Those who knows me, know that I'm a fastidious type of bloke that looks after his gear. I wash the pedal in a bucket of warm, soapy water to prevent any grime build up continuously, obviously to no avail.

Does anyone know where I can purchase these pedals at a low price?

Cheers Dave

Round plug or rectangular plug model?
I brought one from Fishelectronics in USA on ebay for around $100 look for item  400224558671 on ebay.,
Another and better alternative is to see if you can pick up a co-pilot conversion. They go for around $150 in the states but you will have to use a forwarding agent such as shipitto who will charge you $9 plus actual postage to sent it on to australia.
Once you have used a co pilot you will never go back to foot pedal.
If you have a round pedal foot control I can give you a loan of a co pilot conversion for you to try out.Only thing I wont be back home till sunday .
I am in redland bay
Cheers
Ray

Thanks for the offer Ray. It's a rectangular/oval plug.

Mine does it to, pain in the proverbial. Although for my use I would be turning a lot less than you, as its on an all electric boat - I just try and use the rear motor only to steer. Repeated thumps curses and generous use of the evil eye and threats of tossing overboard will usually get it to work on the 4th or 5th attempt.

As mines 24 volt, and the battery bank is pushing 10 years old, it may get replaced with a 12 volt model soon, only having to buy one battery would give me $400 to put toward a new bow mount.

I've never had an issue with a Minn Kota foot pedal.  I've found that if you are using them in rust water or with sand around a little bit of maintenance is required.  Normally I'd just fill the kitchen sink with warm water and a bit of dish washing liquid and swish the foot pedal around in it for a bit then rinse it out and leave it to dry.  I don't think Minnn Kota approve of this method.  I also prefer not to wrap the lead around the foot pedal when it is not in use.  That can break wires.  If you buy a new iPilot you won't need to worry about a pedal.

Never have used the motor in rusty water Dale. I must be having some bad luck. I Googled the problem and that earlier model pedal is notorious for having problems. I have found a few things that may fix the problem while looking over many threads, here in Australia and in the U.S.

Mine would only have ever been used in the salt once or twice as well. Just poor design I suspect.
