 The Honourable Mark McArdle

Be DAM smart and safe this school holidays

Holiday-makers and day-trippers are being urged to be ‘DAM smart’ on and around south east Queensland dams this September school holidays.

Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle said Seqwater would work with the Queensland Police Service to conduct patrols around the region’s major dams to enforce safe and responsible behaviour on and off the water.

Mr McArdle said with the start of the warmer weather more people were likely to take advantage of the recreation areas.

“More than 130,000 people are expected to visit and vacation at recreation areas across Seqwater dams in south east Queensland over these school holidays,” Mr McArdle said.

“Seqwater’s recreation areas provide access to a range of water-based and on-shore activities including boating, camping and fishing, as well as facilities such as picnic areas, barbecues, toilets, walking trails and playgrounds.”

Mr McArdle said Seqwater’s dam safety campaign, with the slogan ‘Don’t be DAM stupid’, was designed to educate people to ‘rethink’ their behaviour both on and around dams, to create a safe holiday environment for everyone.

“The majority of visitors are very well behaved and make the most of the facilities, however even small amounts of dangerous and inappropriate behaviour affect everyone,” he said.

“We are urging people to be ‘DAM smart’—stay under the speed limit on and off the water; for boaties and jet skiers, keep your distance from swimmers; and for families, supervise children at all times.”

Ipswich District Country Patrol Group Inspector Charysse Pond said police would target anti-social behaviour across all the recreational areas, including drink-driving on land and water.

“This is not about stopping people from enjoying themselves and having fun, it’s about ensuring people act responsibly and consider the safety and comfort of others,” Inspector Pond said.
