A couple of first's
« on: September 25, 2011, 09:12:10 AM »
A couple of first's were achieved in the last two days with me helping a fellow forumite onto his first bass and myself getting my first surface bass this morning. Yesterday myself and a fishing buddy Adam went exploring some new water with the aim of getting him his first bass and boy did he do it in style. We managed to pull three fish out of one snag dropping one at the base of the steep bank but Adam's failed hookup on a surface strike and then hookup on a subsequent cast was a highlight. You can tell by his smile he's pretty happy. I dropped a couple more later but they didn't feel of size so not to worry. At another spot the other day I pulled the hooks on a fish twice in three casts at the same lily pad so vowed to come back and get him on a surface lure. Keen to record the first I set up my camera in video mode on my homemade chest lanyard and whipped out for a quick sess on sunrise this morning. I had a little cicada lure a GT BUG tied on and gave it a test cast at another raft of lilies before the main event. Two twitches and a healthy little bass on the surface only a small one but on the surface never the less. OK onto were the bigger guy lived. This fish felt a bit bigger than the average the other day so I imagine he would rule his bit of realestate as it looked like a good ambush spot being on the edge of a channel the lead out of a small bay. On goes the video camera out goes the lure - twitch twitch pause - this was repeated with no result so out goes the lure a little further to lengthen the retrieve. As it neared the spot a long pause - the magpies and kookaburras chatted while I bit my lip - twitch BANG I'm on got ya. I just knew he would be there and am stoked it all came together. I went home for brekky pretty happy. The video came out not too bad (not go pro quality) but I have no idea how to upload assuming it has to be put on youtube or vimeo first which my techno phobe brain can't suss. May get the primary school kid across the road to help ;D Here's a couple of stills with Adam's first bass first.

Id bet money on it being a berkly scum dog, they are a pretty good lure for skinny creeks the bass love em.

Cheaper than a sammy 65 anyway.

Thanks for that Editor I will keep that in mind. Upon close inspection of the video there is a little too much background in it that could reveal its location so I'll have to think about that one. Can you cut short a video and not show the whole lot ? Then maybe I could edit it just to show the strike. Thanks PAT.

Nice piece of water Pat, looks and sounds like your hooked on this type of fishing. How awesome is exploring and discovering new grounds to fish?

That lure looks like it'll catch many more, those sub-surface lures are my ammo of choice first up when hitting these waterways.

Well done boys on your first's!

Steve

Yeah was a 3B, I quite like them bit easier to cast then a px45 and around the same amount of action.

After Sunday's session, I'm addicted to those Zara Puppies. It's awesome how these old style lures are still selling and why not, they are very effective. I seem to drag it out more often than not over my Sammy 65.

No matter what, you can't beat surface strikes no matter what top water lure you've got attached to your leader.

Addicted that's an understatement - I just started back at work after 2 weeks holiday and only missed one days fishing during the two weeks and had dawn and dusk sessions on about four of those days. The brackish was as close as I got to the sea on one occasion !!!! On a slightly related note I saw the biggest red bellied black ever down the road arcing up as two guys were trying to photograph it. It was at least as thick as my wrist (60-65mm) and looked severely p#ssed off !! I hope it bites the dumb ####s. Things to look out for. Cheers guys.

I saw a red bellie at my jack spot Saturday arv and pulled a tick of my ankle on sunday morning. I am thinking it was from the jack spot as I didn't have long pants on but still things to look out for.
