Perfect boat for Dams/Inshore around islands off Mackay??
« on: April 01, 2012, 02:32:52 PM »
Hi Guys ,

Been a while since i been on here ( changed username ) and been too long since i've done any regular serious fishing for a few reasons  :'( . Just moved west of mackay( from sunshine coast ) for work and by time spring comes around i plan on buying a new boat after regretfully having to sell my well decked out 385 explorer a couple years ago due to having my car stolen...

I'm interested in some thoughts of what would be the ideal boat for chasing some pelagics around some of the closer islands off mackay etc as well as the barra in the dams , i've done heaps of impoundment barra fishing so i know what i need for that style of fishing but don't wanna miss out on the option of getting amongst the pelagics and reefies as well , i understand there will be compromises but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers- Hirsty

I have a 450 Clitrex topender with a 60 on the back. Has been a awsome boat. I mainly fish dams but its great for running out to close reefs if down the coast or heading up to the barra dams. If it blows up ya know ya still right on some of the bigger impoudments. Had many years of good service out of it and cant complain 1 bit.

The waters off Mackay can get a bit ugly so you need to ensure that what your driving will get you home. The two closest islands you can nearly walk to so I assume you want to get out to Keswick etc. If that's the case I would be looking at something close to 5m (I have got caught in a 5.2 coming back when it blew up some lovely 2.5 - 3m washing machine cr@p and it was not fun). So I don't have the answer (I stick to my 4.1 wheelie bin in the dams and see if I can grab a deckie spot occasionally  :D )

Take a look at these Scott.

Deeper hull for outside fishing, yet small enough for impoundment fishing. A flat deck up front to mount a leccy and plenty on room insde the hull.

The 4.55m model would be my pick.

Cheers Bracey , they look like a good alrounder....

drjfly , i've never been fishing off mackay or the surrounding areas so for me it will be relying on info from hopefully people in the know hence why i'm on the search now even though i'm months away from buying a boat. I did some research today on the Newry island group north of Seaforth...?? I love my sports fishing and just want something that will get me to some places where i can chase pelagics either on the troll or throwing slugs and poppers and maybe chase a few reefies... Do you live around mackay? maybe i could PM you and ask you a few questions...??

Cheers - Hirsty   :thanks
