Wivenhoe is full of them Logan's inlet is a good place but anywhere with gentle slopping banks is worth a try I have had a lot of fun catching them on plastics at Logan's Inlet.
Good luck

Are those Garfish still around in Winter?

Plastics? Could you describe what those plastics are please?

I've never heard of gar being caught on plastics until today.

Cheers, Bondy

Ok, never had fished gar with plastics, always used fresh made dough or used prawns cut into small pieces, buggers 9 times out of 10 always get off the hooks I use.

Float I use might also be an issue. Is the float suppose to stay flat on the water surface, or dangle down as in when chasing luderick?

The pencil float I used always seem to stay on top of the water like a submarine.

Tempted to go to Wivenhoe Logans Inlet next week and give it ago but not until I get the basics sorted.  Any advice would be welcome.

Cheers, Bondy

I think they are still around in winter maybe not as active the plastic i used was the tail of a white grub rigged on a small gar hook like you would use for bait as long as you keep it moving it smash it it may also be usefull to use a small float or small piece of foam as a float it seams to help get their attention

G'day Schippy,

Thanks mate.

I'll soon find out if they are or not. Early 6.00am , hopefully away from boating traffic and zero wind or well sheltered from the wind.

Plastics too complicated for me, I'll stick to fresh dough  and small cut prawns.

sorry for the very very late reply Bondy, how did you go getting those hooks?,i think you can get the green mustad ones from BCF but your best bet for smaller odd size hooks is on fleabay, there is a guy on there who does cheap fly hooks and is very quick at processing/delivering them ,Ive got some i'll find out the brand for you

Did no good, had a few take the bait but no hook up.

I did go into BFC to see if those hooks were available, none at the time. They may not stock them any longer.

I used #14 long shank fly hooks and bread kneeded back to dough, For a float the old wooden spring clothes peg, pop the timber bits off the spring, drill a small hole in the chamfered end, loop the leader through the hole and back over the 1/2peg to allow adjustment of depth. The tapered shape of the peg allows floatation without much resistance when they bites are light. A tiny coarse fishing style reuseable split shot for weight is all that needs to keep the dough down 2-4 inches.
BIG TIP...buy some cheap jatz/ritz crackers and crush them up as burley, the oil in them also flattens the ripples in the water allowing visual contact when the Gar are about to bite, cuts down on gut hooking.

I'm not a fly fisherman , whereabouts did you buy those fly hooks from?

Thanks, Bondy

Bondy. Certainly not from any of the chain stores. For good specialty items try Charltons at Redbank if your a westy, or Tackle Warehouse if you are on the eastern/middle part of Brissie. Otherwise you will see them from time to time on evilbay.
