Seven Hundred anglers take to Burrendong
Over seven hundred anglers took to the water for the IWRA’s 2011 Canobolas Marine Lake Burrendong Classic, and in turn raised tens of thousands of dollars for the rejuvenation of the Central West’s inland waterways.
With Easter at the back end of April this year, and coinciding with ANZAC day memorial services, anglers were successful in catching a variety of species including Golden Perch, Murray Cod, Silver Perch and Catfish. Carp and Redfin were also on the bite, with thousands of Redfin being hauled in to be counted by IWRA marshals.
Neville McClair stunned everyone in the field on Sunday when he managed to troll up one of the biggest Murray Cod ever seen to emerge from the depths of Lake Burrendong. Measuring 116cms and with an estimated weight of 60 pounds, IWRA committee member and marshall Gordon Cowan did the honours, measuring and releasing the dinosaur-like fish to fight again another day.
Tons of Redfin were also extracted by anglers over the weekend, with an impressive pile heaped high on the Lake Burrendong State Park tipper at the end of each day’s competition fishing. Thomas Haycock caught the biggest bag of Redfin for the event, with a staggering 513 fish.
The IWRA would like to thank all sponsors, helpers, and marshalls, as without them this not for profit event would not be possible. The IWRA is keenly seeking new sponsors, and invites any interested parties to contact IWRA President Matt Hansen on 0427 454 357, or IWRA Vice President Mick O’Neill on 0402 232 479 or go to www.iwra.com.au
