Never a dull moment....
« on: November 25, 2011, 12:16:47 AM »
After having a short fishing session last week on one of my local creeks I eagerly awaited my days off this week hoping we wouldn’t get any rain in the meantime. I had experienced a good hit that de-skirted my spinner bait last week so I was filled with high hopes for the next session.
We weren’t disappointed!!

After a conversion with Steve( AKA Bushwacker) last night we put a plan in motion to launch at 5am the following morning. After a slight mishap with a stray treble and getting a quick lesson on how to remove said hook from flesh using line method we were on our way. And no it wasn’t me!
Not alot of action in the first pool and we planned on heading up to the road bridge before turning for home. The water has cleared up beautifully since the last heavy storm a few weeks ago but we did encounter some debris in patches. The bass started to play further upstream and we soon had some good hook up’s coming over the side. A running tally was started for giggles and s#*t stirrin’ and I was leading the way.

Plenty of laughs and a few choice words from Steve were to be heard after I lobbed a cast into a lay down tree that would have been the death of my lure and as soon as he had said the same I was smashed. After some quick work with the rod I managed to stop him from stitching me up in the branches and breathed a sigh of relief. Steve soon joined me in landing some bass after enduring scores of frustratingly huge hits that failed to find the pointy ends with me reminding him of the score. I nearly came unstuck after tea bagging over a rather high branch with Steve commenting on that it would be funny if I hooked up. You guessed it... I got smashed again!! He went round to land it for me from the other side but the bass had other ideas and came screaming back at me and I ended up hand lining him in.

We had our casts finding the usual fish lacking structure...namely trees but that what it’s all about.
I did encounter a water dragon that thought it was a bass and had my first hook up on one. Now what a fun catch they are!!NOT!!.. He jumped in after my lure and before I could rip it away he was nailed. While trying to get him in he decided it would be a good idea to bite the offending hook in his leg. Smart move Mr. Lizard. I now had two sets of trebles to remove. The ones in his mouth were the hardest. Think it will be the last time he decides to eat a lure.

On the paddle up we had encountered a couple of dogs swimming and surmised they were out for a frolic for the day. On the way back we encountered two more dogs but different ones and one was in serious trouble. He had either slid down the embankment and was stuck exhausted having no luck in gaining a footing to climb back out. He was tangled in roots and absolutely buggered. His little mate was up on the bank above keeping guard. Steve and I headed over to try and get him out. After having no luck in getting him back under the roots and around to a section where he could climb out I was starting to wonder how we could get him onto dry land. He was half perched on the side of my yak and I was trying to counter balance his weight. This pooch had to be part bull dog/boxer I think. Lovely nature and I think he knew we were there to help. He would hang his head in my lap catching his breath. In the end I decided that the only way out for the pooch was to get Steve to counter balance the off side of my yak while I dragged and coaxed him into my yak and onto my lap. I kept thinking I hope we can both fit and he doesn’t flip me into the drink. Well he ended up across the yak on my lap and I managed to pull us around into the little drain by way of tree roots where he would be able to get onto dry ground safely. Mission accomplished and he was off with his mate. Talk about a good feeling as I reckon he would have drowned otherwise. Thank goodness we saw him when we did.

We were pretty well buggered and decided to head for home managing a few casts on the trip back.
Final tally for me was 7 Bass and 1 water dragon with Steve landing 3 ½ Bass...
Thanks for the company and laughs Steve. Great to share one of my spots with you.

Reminds me of the time we rescued a Cow and calf on the Richmond above Casino. She's just given birth and they were both too buggered to get back up the steep bank. We got hold of the property owner and he got into the water with them while we towed her along behind the boat with a rop around her neck. You may have had a bit of trouble doing that in the 'yak tho.

Yeh mate she was, there was afterbirth all over the place and the little calf was in all sorts of bother. Fancy coming into the world in a bloody river with baitfish chewing on the bits floating around.  I'm happy we got them out, although it says volumes for some of the steep river banks around here and how they should probably be fenced. It's not uncommon to see dead cattle in the water here.
