The Smile Says It All
« on: September 26, 2010, 08:52:14 PM »
G'day all,

After keeping a close eye on the balmy weather we had mid-morning, I thought it would be a great opportunity to check out the local creek to see how it has changed in a few weeks since we had a bit of rain. I invited a good mate to share a spot on my double yak and headed off getting on the water about 2pm, hot, humid, sun in the sky it couldn't get any better.

Ten metres from where I launch is a great little snag. My first cast using a sub-surface lure got wacked and then the second cast, a pattern that emerged throughout the whole afternoon. I changed surface and sub-surface lures about three times until I found confidence in one lure, the one that got wacked on my first cast. There was so much action on the water, mullet jumping, prawns skipping across the water and the Bass wanting to play but not hard enough, half strikes and some awesome follow ups, time and time again which was quite frustrating but great fun.

Scott had never caught a Bass before or fished out of a kayak, so the pressure was on to produce. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be, however he did manage to catch two bream that had ventured all the way up in the fresh water. I managed to land three healthy Bass, with the first Bass that I caught giving me an awesome challenge as it hit the lure when I was passing under a horizontal tree laying across the creek.  Come 6pm we had enough and decided to head for home a little wet from the light showers that fell from the humid skies.  A great afternoon was had even though many fish were dropped.

Cheers Dave

G'Day Dave.

Well done mate, the smile does tell a story.... thanks for posting.  :tick

Do you ever get any Mangrove Jacks up thatfar? Should be some mixing in with the bass in those forrestry criks as the snakes become more active...

Too right Dale, I knocked off work early on Friday to head home and mow the lawn so I could spend some time on the water over the weekend. Saturday was taken up by spending some of my mates money at Barra Jacks,
G'Day Dave.

setting him up for a Barra trip and buying some lures for myself while I was also there.

Fitzy, the first Bass I caught, I thought may have been a Jack it hit so hard. I think the water temps may be still a little low. I didn't have my fish finder on board so I wasn't able to determine exactly what it was, guessing around 20 to 21 degrees. Whilst I was fishing up there I was thinking the whole time I was fishing too light if one happened to take a lure. As you know that area looks the goods and as the weather heats up I might fish a bit heavier just in case.

Here's a couple of shots of Scott's Bream that he caught yesterday and a small Flathead I caught up there a few weeks back on a blade.

Cheers Dave

Thanks Ray it was great to meet you.

You wouldn't believe it but the next morning one of our members was doing some trolling in his yak and landed a 50cm+ Bass for his troubles.

They are in there, hopfully a few more too in the near future.

Cheers Dave

Well it has just been less than a week gone by since I took Scott for his maiden kayak and Bass fish experience and I gets a phone call from Scott about Wednesday from him within a tackle store wanting to know what braid and lures I was using last Sunday when I had a bit of success up the creek.

OK no worries, he's hooked on catching fish now on lures to which prior to our little expedition he was a quite sceptical and an avid bait fisho.

Today I gets a phone call about lunch time "Dave, how are ya mate? I just thought I'd let you know I've just bought a kayak"

Golden!!!  ;)
