Lake Jindabyne Trout Fishing Report. For the week starting February 3rd 2014

NEWS –
All the schools have started back for the 2014 year and early February is one of the quietest times of the year for the Snowy Mountains.
There are very few anglers about at the moment and you can just about have the lakes and rivers to yourself.
Over the weekend the weather was again very hot with temperatures reaching high 30’s and while it is hot on land the lake water temperatures are still not too bad and there are still plenty of trout to be caught all day long if you have a boat and downriggers. Other than that the best trout fishing has been very early in the morning. Today we have a cool change expected with temperatures only in the low 20’s for the next few days before warming up a little for the weekend.
The rivers are still fishing Ok with the best fishing up higher or in areas where the weather is running and the trout have plenty of oxygen. We may as well enjoy the warm weather while it lasts because it is not long now before autumn.
I am off at the end of next week for my Explore the Khancoban Fly Fishing Weekend where I will guide a group of anglers also into northern Victoria. We have a big group going on this trip to help me celebrate 25 years of my business so the next fishing report will not be mid next week. Check out Facebook for some updates from Nathan while I am away.

LAKE LEVEL and TEMPERATURE
The lake level has been dropping a little due to the heat of last week now at 82%.
The Lake temperature today was 21 degrees C on the surface.
Best methods to catch a trout.
Best method – Trolling by boat using downriggers at 45 feet.
Best lake lure – For spinning Rapala CD and let it sink before retrieving.
Best lake area – Sheltered bays with deep dropoffs.
Best fly method lake – Black and olive Woolley buggers and Williamson’s Goldfish.
Best River Fly Fishing– Brown Beetle, tea tree beetle, stimulator patterns and Caddis patterns.
Best River Lures – Small spinners into the faster runs or a 5cm CD Rapala used the same way.
Let’s have a look at what the fishing is going to be like over the next week.

Trolling.
Start the morning off with a surface line and one line with 3 colours of lead core line. After the first hour of light your best with leadlines and downriggers. In the middle of the day we have been using downriggers and still catching trout down at about 50 feet. 35 feet is about perfect if you just want to downrigg early.
The Tasmanian Devil number 111 “Willy’s Special’ or my Black/ Orange (especially early) is still about the best Tasmanian Devil colour at the moment followed by the yellowing brown bomber. Best Rapala colours are rainbow trout and brown trout at the moment. With water levels still high, some of the better trolling areas this month will be Hatchery Bay and Hayshed Bay and Sid’s Bay through to Rushes Bay however watch the rocks as the East Jindabyne Islands start to reappear as the water levels drop.
Yes we do hire leadlines and downriggers!

Lake Bait Fishing
(Primarily most rivers and streams in the Snowy Mountains Region are fly and lure only, We recommend that you first check with the Department of Industry and Investment NSW (NSW Fishing rules) as to which rivers in the area you can legally bait fish in. IF IN DOUBT DON’T BAIT FISH in the RIVERS!)
We are coming to the end of thye mudye season with most hatching with the heat and so they are hard to come by now if you want to use them for bait. Some local dams are also starting to dry up a bit. Artificial mudeyes or maggots are also worth a try under a float. Best bait fishing areas are Creel Bay, Hatchery Bay and Curiosity Rocks. Another great area is the bottom of Discovery Holiday Park near Widows Creek Inlet.

Lake Spinning
Best lure spinning has been on the lake has been in the shallow bays early in the day and you can start by spinning the edges with Celtas or flicking floating Spotted Dog Rapalas and Bullet lures.
Still good reports from people spinning with the glow Vibrax spinners in the dark.
Best spinning late in the day is where there are steep drop offs with plenty of rocks will be the best areas. Bays like Creel, Hatchery and the Snowy Arm all fish well. On brighter days, change to a Tassie and cast further out over drop offs, letting the lure sink before you slowly retrieve.
Best areas have been down at the South Arm, Hatchery Bay or near Banjo Patterson Park.

River Spinning.
Small Rapalas in the floating variety with the best colours being rainbow trout and perch. You can also try some Vibrax Glow spinners very early and late in the day or some soft plastics like the Strike Tiger, olive pepper. On the smaller streams like the Moonbah or upper Snowy, a variety of lures will work, but the best will be small bladed spinners, like the Gillies Feathertails or Celtas in numbers one or two sizes. For deeper water the Rapala CD5 Spotted Dog or Gillies Tailbender.

Fly Fishing Lake
This week your best fishing will be sunrise and sunset. Try any of the streamer patterns such as Mrs Simpson and Williamson’s Snowy Mountains Gold Fish. Olive green nymphs and shrimp patterns are also worth a try.
You may get an evening rise after a sunny day but to date they have been few and far between on the lake.
The South Arm, Creel Bay and Kangaroo Bay (if you have a boat) are all great for fishing at the moment.
Fly fishing Rivers and Streams
The Alpine streams are still at their best and plenty of small fish are being caught on dry fly.
Fly selection is not too critical in these streams but placement is critical or else you just scare all the fish.
Flies you must have are brown beetle patterns, Snowy Hopper, Stimulator, Royal Wulff and Parachute hoppers. Maybe a brown and a black nymph if the fish are not rising and a white moth or white Wulff
And maybe you had better throw a midge pattern, brown mayfly and an Adams in as well to make certain you have most circumstances covered.
The Thredbo River is a little trickier at the moment with the hot weather and the warmer temperatures the water temperature is also starting to rise so you need to think about the best places to cast a line.
For visitors to the Snowy’s we have a full range of fishing tackle for hire at my shop and fishing tours are now available. Yes 2014 is the 25th anniversary of my business and we are going to celebrate!
We have vacancies for our family / children Learn to Fish lessons held every Tuesday and Thursday at 9am. BYO or hire a rod. Cost $20 and all kids get a show bag worth a lot more than the $20 you pay. (Thanks to our sponsors).
Bookings are taken at our shop or by calling 64561551 shop hours.
