Central West fishers play by the rules
18 Sep 2012 - NSW Fisheries

Department of Primary Industries (DPI) fisheries officers are commending organisers and fishers of the 12th Grabine Freshwater Fishing Tournament held at Wyangala Dam on 24-26 August.

DPI Supervising Fisheries Officer, Jason Baldwin, said the compliance rate at the 2012 event was an extremely pleasing
99 per cent.

"This year’s excellent compliance rate carries on from the good work done by fisheries officers at last year’s event when the compliance rate was 96 per cent," he said.

"In seven years the compliance rate at the Grabine Tournament has risen from 69 per cent to 99 per cent, indicating that fishers’ attitudes are changing for the better," he said.

"Fisheries officers have been attending the event since 2001 to educate fishers about the rules in place to protect fishing stocks for future generations.

"It’s great to see this event continue to develop and draw large numbers of participants, as the Garbine Tournament is one of the Central West’s most successful and long running fishing competitions."

Fisheries compliance officers attended over the three days of the Grabine Tournament to ensure that the rules in place to protect our state’s valuable fisheries resources were being followed.

"Over 1000 fishers participated in this year’s event," Mr Baldwin said.

"Fisheries Officers spoke with more than 500 participants during the competition.

"Only four penalty notices and two written cautions were issued over the three days.

"Alleged offences detected include failing to have a current fishing licence in immediate possession while fishing and the filleting of fish adjacent to waters."

Mr Baldwin said prizes for catch and release were a major feature at this year’s Grabine event and next year organisers plan to further promote the catch and release components of the competition.

"The organisers are to be commended for their efforts in helping to change to mind set of fishers at this event so that they can enjoy their sport sustainably and safely," he said.
