More than 3500 attend 'Fish & Famly Fun Day' at Narrandera
11 Oct 2010

Narrandera Fisheries Centre's inaugural free "Fish & Family Fun Day‟ held last Saturday was a huge success with more than 3500 people attending.

Event organisers Industry & Investment NSW (I&I NSW) research scientist Lee Baumgartner and manager Les Rava said they were thrilled with the response to the event, which involved seven months of preparation.

Dr Baumgartner said it was very satisfying to see not only locals, but others from as far afield as seven hours away, take part in a range of hands-on, fish-related activities.

"Fishcare volunteers and centre staff worked feverishly during the day, helping more than 1000 people participate in fishing and casting competitions, with many people holding a fishing rod or catching a fish for the first time.

“In excess of 100 fish were caught including silver perch, golden perch and Murray cod with most participants walking away with a prize (either a hat, lure, catch-and-release bag or fishing rod),” he said.

Celebrity cook Paul Mercurio also drew large crowds.

“Paul entertained an enthusiastic crowd with his beer-marinated yabby spears, alfoil wrapped BBQ silver perch and prosciutto-wrapped Murray cod with cassoulet.

“Many people also had the opportunity to meet Paul and chat about cooking and his show 'Mercurio's Menu'”,
Dr Baumgartner said.

Invasive fish expert Keith Bell from K&C Fisheries attempted to convert the sceptics by showing people the correct way to prepare and cook carp.

“A lot of people walked away with a new respect for the infamous fish and some even mentioned they would try to cook the next carp they caught,” Dr Baumgartner said.

The day provided something for everyone from face painting and yabby races to electrofishing demonstrations and the opportunity to watch barramundi strike lures in the Australian Travelling Fish Show.

More than 35 exhibitors set up trade stalls ranging from tackle and outdoor stores to information displays on threatened species, fisheries compliance and safe boating.

“We would like to thank major sponsors I&I NSW, NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, Diawa, Narrandera Community Bank (Bendigo Bank), Murray-Darling Basin Authority and Millbrae Quarries whose generous donations enabled the event to be held free of charge.

“Many other organisations such as Riverina Sportsfishing, AC lures, Oar-Gee Lures, Mud Guts Spinnerbaits, Rod's Compleat Angler and Gangster Lures also donated prizes for many of the events.

“Also a big thank you to the many volunteers whose wonderful assistance made the day a fantastic success,”
Dr Baumgartner said.
