We now need to form a stocking group.

THE state government will overturn 40 years of tradition when it opens up Capalaba's Leslie Harrison Dam for recreational water sports and fishing later this year.

Energy and Water Supply Minister Mark McArdle made the announcement on a whistle-stop visit to Redland and the dam on Tuesday.

Mr McArdle said he could not fix an opening date until after completion of a state government review on the future of water sports on all state dams.

"I think the idea of using the dam for recreational purposes and non-motorised water sports is an excellent idea that will add another bow to tourism in this area," he said.

"I'd also like to see the dam stocked with fish for recreational anglers and with the council and the community, this will be a success."

Members of Wynnum Redlands Canoe Club and Queensland Canoeing hoped the dam would one day become an international kayaking venue.

Wynnum Redlands Canoe Club's David Bicknell said a one-off kayaking event on the dam on December 30 proved opening up the dam would be a fillip for tourism.

Access to the dam would be on Mount Gravatt-Capalaba Road, about 500m south of Brightview Street.

Mr McArdle refused to comment on claims toxic emissions from a proposed power plant at Mount Cotton would fall into the dam's catchment area as the development's planning application was in the Planning and Environment Court.

Great news Ray, I live even closer than you!

Two questions though:

1. What fish are in there ATM other than tilapia?

2.  What fish should or could be stocked there?

Cheers

Pete

Bass and yellas and lots of spangled perch probably from the actions of midnight stocking groups.Bass and the very occasional yella regually caught below the dam wall after overflow events.
The tilapia would provide plenty of entertainment for the first few years until any stocked fish became established.. I doubt if yellas would be allowed to be stocked nowdays as it is outside their natural range  but bass, toga and if they ever become available possibly marys.
Several years ago I saw fisheries doing an electrofish there but do not know what they found.
With all the shallow bays and lily beds it should make a fantastic toga dam.
 Cheers

Thanks for the post Ray, I got some info on it today at the boat show... very good news indeed.

It's outside of Saratoga and Mary River Cod natural range as well.... However I would hazard a guess that a couple of "out of towner" fish might get the nod, maybe not. Also depends on the make-up of a restocking group & their management plan as well. ie would they want a meat factory, sports fishery or try to be all things to all people. Pre-stocking survey info would reveal a make-up of the food web and an informed decision should be made from there.

Cheers,

Close enough to NSW for eastern cod I reckon, at least you can get fingerlings for those!  8)
Bass for sure, but do need something for those that like to take a fish or two for the plate. Not much choice natural range wise.

I thought that Marys would have been ok seeing that they will be allowed in Wyaralong but suppose it will depend on whatever management plan is implemented and how it is presented.
There are canoe and yak clubs already established in the area who will have no problems getting their act together but getting a stocking group up and running will be a different kettle of fish.
Reckon it will take at least a year to ge4t the different user groups together and then the infrastructure for the access point provided.
Will it be a joint venture between the council, seq water and state gov.The dam itself is partly on Capalaba electorate and the majority in Mansfield but at least both sitting members belong to the same party.
I know that fisheries did an electrofish there several years ago but wonder what other data if any is available on what is actually in the dam.
Maybe David Roberts has done some research there.
Very interesting and exciting times ahead.Just hope it doesnt get strangled by red tape and lack of funding.
 Cheers
Ray

Info at hand is that this idea might be vetoed with SEQWater recreation review.

I find it difficult to imagine that SEQWater would want any change from the Status Quo.

We can only hope for a positive outcome.
The info that I have been getting is that the minister has been wielding a very big stick at SEQ water telling them to get their act together and has set a date for them to release their recreational policy.
Mr Mcardle has been involving all the local LNP members asking them what they want and some SEQ water people very unhappy.
Cheers
