The Department of Primary Industries is investigating illegal fishing activities on the Upper Hunter's Glenbawn Dam after several illegal fishing nets were discovered there.

Fisheries officers this week discovered two nets designed to catch a large number of fish stretched across narrow passes in the dam.

That is on top of the discovery of another three nets last month.

Dam users have taken to Facebook to deplore the act, showing videos of fish including bass, yellowbelly, silver perch and cat fish caught in the nets dying a slow, painful death.

Users are also concerned about the potential for the nets to damage boats.

Fisheries said it will be conducting regular patrols on the dam and are encouraging anyone who sees illegal activity to report it via the Fishers Watch phone line on 1800 043 536 or report the matter online.
