Local wildlife set to benefit from Pelican Point revitalisation

Local wildlife and visitors to the Atherton Tablelands are set to benefit from a revitalisation project at Pelican Point on the banks of Tinaroo Falls Dam, south of Cairns.

SunWater Service Manager (North) James Mummery said SunWater has engaged a local contractor to assist with tidying up the 20 hectare SunWater owned site after recent tree vandalism caused public safety risks at the dam.

“Pelican Point is a great location for visitors to the Atherton Tablelands to observe local bird and wildlife around the shores of Lake Tinaroo,” Mr Mummery said.

“Unfortunately, SunWater has noticed a number of trees in the area have been vandalised which has made the site a potential safety hazard for visitors to the area as well as destroying habitat for local wildlife.”

Mr Mummery said the project includes removing dead trees, brush cutting overgrown vegetation and applying weed treatments to provide safe access for the local community.

“Pelican Point attracts many different species of birds, mammals and other fauna, and this work will contribute to ensuring safe access for visitors to the dam and maintaining habitat for local wildlife,” he said.

SunWater has reported the incident to local authorities and has urged members of the public who witness any suspicious activity around the dam to contact the police.

Located on the Barron River, south of Cairns, Tinaroo Falls Dam is an important source of water for local irrigators and agribusiness within the Mareeba Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme.
