Title: Summer in the fresh.
Post by: LilDave on January 02, 2013, 09:36:47 PM
Hi all, just joined and thought I might as well make my first post a report... Well a combine report really.  We're pretty lucky in Nth Qld with a bunch of sweet and sour options close to home..... One of my favourite creeks has both.... But this year just gone I have become addicted to surface luring for jacks in the very lowest sections of freshwater here.

An average two hour session will see up to half a dozen sexy mangrove Jack come to hand, and atleast as many failed hook ups, a bunch of follows, spooks and even ignorance....

I tend to have most success on walk the dog style lures, and curl tail soft plastics burnt across the waters surface.

I'll put a few pics up in the am I reckon....

My other passion is fly, but my Sweetwater success has been limited so far, with a couple of jungle perch and spangled to my name, as well as one or two rat Barra (talking fresh only of course  ;)).

 :D

Thanks Pat, good to see some familiar faces already....  This is a bit of heresy but anyway...  Been having heaps of fun with these guys lately.

Good colour for the age of those jacks, the local ones here are very light coloured at that size.

Great pics Dave - looks like your giving the Berkley 3B's a bit of a nudge. You'll have to come up with a fly that mimics the walk the dog style and get into them with the twigs. Cheers Pat.

Like a Zara's Spook mate?

Actually, thanks for the reminder I have a couple of Shannon's Streamers at home that'd work (pretty sure they float)... and they should cast OK on the 4wt if not the #2...

Heading out tomorrow, but choosing the sour option with a young fella keen on learning a few basics of lure chuckin'  :youbeauty

On another note...  Like I said before Fly has to be one of my greater obsessions!  Though the wand hasn't been out for a while...

The following pictures have come from some Very SWEET waters not too far from home... and have culminated in two very nice little JPs....  My first actually came on a dead drifted woolly bugger, but the second came from the surface  :youbeauty

And yes Pat...  They came on the #2 :D

The spangled perch are just sexy!  and Boy can they be aggressive!

Nice fish mate. Gotta love those freshwater jacks and I reckon JP's are one of the premier and by far the most underated fish in FNQ.

If we don't get some decent rain soon we might not have much of a Sweetwater fishery....  :Oops)

King tides this weekend mean that my favourite sweetwater haunt will be sour Saturday morning...  Fingers crossed, should mean for some good jacks ....  Still no decent rain though.
