Barra Fingerlings - how secure is the supply?
« on: February 10, 2013, 06:24:33 AM »
I see in the latest FFSAQ minutes that they mentioned Kurt has left GAWB.
Not wanting to get in to Kurt's reasons for leaving (unless they are closing the hatchery!), but it does raise the thought that GAWB is the only supplier of barra fingerlings to us southerners I am aware of.

How at risk are we with just the one supplier? The recent bass season with Bill gone saw a shortage of bass, even though many groups had little or no money to spend this year. Yet there are lots of other suppliers.

Barra might easily end up being in the same boat as Mary Cod. What do people think? Particularly with a new hatchery manager to be found.

I think that Kurt has established his own hatchery.

A few hatcheries produce southern Barra.

Possibly be a price difference between GAWB ones and commercial hatcheries.

Be interesting to see where the impoundments north of the Mason Dixon line get there fingerlings from other than GAWB. Is there a price difference?
