SEQWater today advised that Lake Borumba will be temporarily closed to water-skiing and swimming from Friday 18 January 2013.
As a precautionary measure and in the interest of public safety, Lake Borumba will be temporarily closed to water-skiing and swimming as of Friday, 18 January, due to the presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). Signage will be erected on site advising of the temporary closure of the lake for water-skiing and swimming.
Other permitted recreation activities, such as boating, fishing, canoeing and kayaking on the lake may continue, but primary contact with the water (swimming and water-skiing) is to be avoided. Please note that there are no increased risks to land-based recreation users at Lake Borumba.
Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are naturally occurring organisms and are amongst the earliest known life forms on this planet. Blue-green algae make beneficial contributions to the environment through such avenues as food, fertilisers, waste processors and solar energy conversion. Despite their beneficial functions in the environment, cyanobacteria can also be a source of considerable nuisance. Blooms of cyanobacteria in lakes can pose significant risks to human health and lifestyle through the production of toxins and odorous compounds. It is uncertain how long this temporary closure will continue. Seqwater will be performing further water quality testing at Lake Borumba and updates to the status of the lake will be provided as further information is available.
So if you've been wanting to go kayaking, canoeing or fishing on Lake Borumba but don't want to run the fizz boat gauntlet, this is a great opportunity to visit one of south east Qld's premier sweetwater fishing lakes. :tick

Now thats good news, hopefully ban will stay in place over the long weekend, make it a worthwhile trip!
Maybe worth an early trip with a couple of bags of super-phosphate to gee up the algae ;) ::)

Lake Borumba re-opened to water-skiing and swimming from Saturday, 19 January
Additional water quality testing has indicated that is safe to re-open Lake Borumba to water-skiing and swimming from Saturday, 19 January. The lake was temporarily closed to water-skiing and swimming for a day as a precautionary measure due to the presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria).
Signage indicating the closure will be removed in the morning.
