Good news for anglers keen to drop a line at Burrinjuck
03 Apr 2012 - NSW Fisheries

Almost 80,000 golden perch are being released into Burrinjuck Dam near Yass on Thursday 5 April as part of the NSW Government’s ongoing program to stock NSW waterways with native fish.

The golden perch stocking program is assisted with funds from by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, which is supported by the recreational fishing licence fees.

The golden perch fingerlings have been bred at NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) Narrandera Fisheries Centre.

NSW DPI Narrandera Hatchery Manager, Matthew McLellan, said recent big rains had provided ideal conditions for the release of the fish, which would provide a timely boost to the dam’s native fish numbers.

“Almost a million native fish including golden and silver perch, trout cod, Murray cod and Macquarie Perch will have been harvested this fish stocking season at Narrandera Fisheries Centre to boost native fish populations across NSW,” he said.

“These latest fish will be released into Burrinjuck Dam with help from volunteers from Yass Acclimatisation Society and Yass Soldiers’ Club Fishing Club.

“The fingerlings have been marked with calcein, a harmless flouorescent dye that stains the bony structures of the fish, to allow discrimination between hatchery stocked and wild fish.

“The marked fish will be part of a research project, largely funded by the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust, to measure stocking successes.”

NSW DPI Freshwater Fish Ecologist from the Narrandera Fisheries Centre Dr Lee Baumgartner, said Burrinjuck Dam has received marked fish for the past three years as part of a five-year trial project.

“Anglers have always wanted to know how many of the restocked fish survive and contribute to the State’s fishery and this research will help provide the answers,” he said.

“As well as Burrinjuck Dam, some river sites in the Wakool River (Deniliquin), Murrumbidgee River (Narrandera), Murray River (Tocumwal) and Copeton Dam (Inverell) have also been stocked with marked fish as part of this research.”

Harvesting of native fish will continue to take place at Narrandera Fisheries Centre for another three weeks, when the last of the eight stocking ponds is due to be harvested.
