Inland fishers face fines for illegal fishing
05 Feb 2014 - NSW DPI

Inland fishers who spent their Australia Day long weekend on the water shared it with fisheries officers keeping a keen eye on illegal fishers.

Department of Primary Industries Supervising Fisheries Officer, Peter Tilbrook, said in the Riverina region, a number of fishers were caught setlining and in possession of illegal gear.

“In four separate incidents on the Lachlan River between Hillston and Lake Cargelligo, four individuals were caught set lining and in possession of illegal fishing gear,” Mr Tilbrook said.

“37 setlines in total were seized as well as one prohibited size Murray cod and one eel-tailed catfish which was taken on a setline.

“Eel-tailed catfish are a threatened species of an endangered population within the Murray Darling Basin and are a protected species in all western flowing rivers, creeks and unlisted dams and it is illegal to take, harm or possess protected species. If caught they must be carefully returned to the water immediately.

“Setlines are unattended baited hooks on lines that are attached to trees or snags along the waters edge, where many native fish seek refuge, and can have devastating consequences on our native fish populations. Setlines can no longer be used in any inland waters and are totally prohibited.

“Two attended lines may be used in all inland waters (except some trout waters and closed waters) and these lines must be within 50 metres and in your line of sight.”

In a separate incident on the Lachlan River, an individual was apprehended attempting to take fish by use of a firearm.

“The use of firearms and explosives to take and or destroy fish in all NSW waters is prohibited as is the use of spears, spear guns or bows and arrows in inland waters of NSW,” Mr Tilbrook said.

“Each individual will be issued with a number of penalty notices with a maximum penalty of $500 per offence.”

Fisheries officers also checked 66 anglers in a compliance operation targeting the Menindee Lakes and Darling River from Menindee downstream to Pooncarie over the long weekend.

“Of those anglers checked, 49 were found to comply with fishing rules and regulations,” Mr Tilbrook said.

“Seventeen people were found to be illegally fishing, with a total of 22 offences detected, including failing to pay the Recreational Fishing Fee, failing to have Recreational Fishing Fee receipt in their immediate possession,  possess prohibited size fish, leave line unattended and take fish for sale without authorisation.

“Three Murray cod, 1 golden perch, 15 setlines, 1 unattended fishing rod & reel, 5 yabby traps and 16 bags of carp were seized.”

DPI Fisheries continues to call on the public for help in the fight to stop illegal fishing in the waterways of NSW.You can report illegal or suspect fishing activities to your local Fisheries Office or by contacting the Fishers’ Watch Phone line on 1800 043 536
