Cruising the Dumaresq
« on: July 12, 2013, 07:18:41 PM »
For the 3 days earlier this week myself and 3 other blokes camped on the Dumaresq, and explored about 6km of river. The other two had a canoe but because I've got a crook back and a cubic foot we took a small tinny with an electric on the transom. Exploring downstream yielded bugger all and we ended up below 2 sets of rapids I didn't want to drag the boat through so we decided to pull it out. The only problem was the very steep bank. I solved that by bringing the Pajero down and running out the winch cable. We snigged the boat back up and towed it further upstream to a great section of deeper water and got a hookup almost immediately. Nice little Cod about 60cm then another hookup that was dropped.
We went back the next morning and got a couple more the last one and the biggest going 75cm by that stage we'd decided to pull out and head back home. The water level had dropped about 10cm by day 3 so I would say there had been some releases from Glen Lyon. The other blokes left early on day 3 but stopped to fish a section of the Mole. They got 5 small Cod just walking the banks.

Great stuff JD, thanks for posting.

A 75cm cod from the Dumaresq River is a good fish mate. All on hard body lures mate or were whirly gigs used as well?

fitz..

All on the one lure mate, that yellow one in the pic. We tried spinnerbaits too but no good. That lure looks just like an Oargee but it's a knock off that Gladiator Tackle bought out. My local tackle shop had a few in the cheap bin so I glommed on 'em and now have only 2 left. The other one is in Cod colours. I had to change the hooks to Owners.

John,

Would you know what type/colour lures your friends used on the Mole last week.  I am going camping up there on Monday for 3 days - going to be cold looking at the LR forecast but hopefully the Ginger wine will do its thing.  I will mainly be on the kayak - recently got a OT Vapour so looking forward to giving it a run up there.
Cheers,

Richard

G'day Richard,
They were using home made lures that one of them makes. The colours are fairly neutral tending towards greens and browns, and they have a pretty good bib on them. I think their best Cod went about 60cm. Bugger the Green Ginger, I'll take rum any day.
Cheers mate,
John

Richard,
I just checked with one of my mates who were on the Mole, I was right about the colours of the lure but there was also a bit of yellow on there as well. Yellow seems to be flavour of the month.

Cheers John,

Will sort through the lure drawers to see what I can find.........will have to also check out the secret compartment, the one the wife does not know about, to see what is there!

Going to be chilly going by the weather news last night - nothing is going to stop me going - my last for the season.

Cheers

Richard.
