copeton before closed season
« on: September 20, 2014, 08:57:08 AM »
Well the quest for a decent cod continues and i thought copeton would be worth a go at them. Never fished the place before but was impressed with the scenery upon arrival . First trip i manged 2 cod and dan 2 yells , 2nd trip was in the yaks and managed a pb yella 61cm and pb cod 70cm . Paul finally landed his first cod and 2nd cod and was cheering. last pic is the lures i found in the yak so worth keeping eyes open

Nice report Wes, thanks for the update. I want to get down there one day, trolling or casting at timber?

Cheers

Thanks for the report Wes, great pics.  :thumb

What lures caught the fish? What sort of depth did you catch them?

Well done. Some nice fish there. What length was the yella in the 4th picture?

It's always a bonus when you find a few lures!  8)

I've never fished Copeton before, only water skied there about 10 years ago. Looks like there is a lot more water in it now then when I was last there.

Thanks nativeman , 1st trip was 95% casting for results , 2nd trip was  50% casting 50% trolling with success on both methods, since i had the yak it was easier to work through the timber on the troll. f i had a sounder it would make life easier in the yak.

Cheers mate , the first trip was freezing water temp 8-13 degree, so working vibes along rocky edges in 6-12 mtrs worked for me i just used upgraded g vibes, 2nd trip water was 13-14degree and i had success with the yellas on the g vibe again, my mate was using a oargee so as soon as i found one i tied it on and scored a pb cod at the 6mtr depth. as soon as the water temp gets over 15 the yellas should move shallower and start moving around a lot more. If you could brave the cold at night the locals were smashing monster cod on surface every night , but being a qlder i was not up for the cold  ;D maybe open season or new laws in november i will do some night trips with the big mudeye surface lure i found.

Thanks j , that was my pb yella 61cm i put it around 10-12lb as it was fat and thick. i want to hit one of the 20lb yellas i hear about in there next trip  :D The dam level was just above 30% which makes it good for bush camping more options on where to set up  :) finding lures all so helps figure out what locals are using  ;)
