Now, I believe in 'survival of the fittest', species adaption and even, climate change, for that matter. But who in our generation would believe that they would see Barramundi using 'aerial tactics' to stalk prey!!!!
Seriously, there certainly is a lot of 'concrete' doing a lot of damage to stocked fish throughout Queensland.
Just remember folks....that fish cost 25 cents!!!!
Bring on some hot weather, Huey!!!!!!

Apparently lunchtime on the 1st of February....except in Gladstone, Bowen and the Torres Straits were it has been free-for-all as Campbell shut the Fisheries Patrol stations.
I had been given another suggestion about the photograph:
- that it may have been a bl@@dy big fish-eating spider storing its prey - be scared people!!!
P.S. Now for all those fisherman who said to me after the 2010/11 floods there was no BIG barra left in Awoonga - i beg to differ.....

That's one way of proving your point Shaun. Wonder how the experts are feeling now, knowing there were big fish left in there but they just couldn't catch them!

When will they learn and put a net in there to stop the fish getting out.

I think the studies showed that it wasn't feasible.

The net at Tinaroo works OK apparently but there was a reason possibly cost, that made it a non event elsewhere. It could be that it was cheaper to restock than put up net?

Awoonga has its own hatchery...Tinaroo doesn't.....that basically is the answer. They (GAWB) can replace their fish at a fraction of the cost than any other impoundment in the State. I must make a clarification - I said that the barramundi was a 25 cent fish and I am right...but you are correct, at over a metre, he/she is worth far more. So please accept my apologies.

Replacing 1.2m barramundi with 50mm fingerlings isn't exactly going to help boost tourism.Look at how mmuch they spend on stocking Awoonga compared to Tinaroo. Surely they could put in 50,000 less fingerlings and use that money to save what is in their. You still have years to go before Awoonga reaches it's potential again and that will not happen for as long as we are in a wet period. The Tinaroo net is funded primarily by donations and volounteers. It works.

One other thing.....GAWB are water suppliers (if you know any of the current Board Members......That is all that they should be doing).....and the price they charge their clients water that is all they need to do. They don't particular care about tourism or fishing or fish stocking. The cost of water compare to what tourism & fishing costs just doesn't go close to being equal...so it really is an uncomfortable add-on to the GAWB operations.
The did do some initial studies into cost and siting of a net but it just wasn't suitable or economical.
As said previously, I believe not ALL BIG fish evacuated the dam just like 2010-11. Not all barramundi want to head to the salt. Just like last time, things have changed again in Awoonga. I will say - the good fisher will learn quickly the vaguries of the new snags, the new weed beds, the new deep water, drop=offs, etc..... the average fisher better take notes!!!!
