Title: Replacing trebles on off the shelf lures
Post by: Freshwater Newby77 on May 12, 2014, 04:55:09 PM
Gidday all.
So I see everyone and their dog recommends replacing the trebles on off the shelf lures.
My question is- what size trebles? I guess it is relative to the type and size of lure?
So for 5cm minnows?
6cm poppers? Both came with sz 8 trebles (1.7 height .7cm gap)
Be grateful for help. Also stainless vs red ones.Any preference/difference?

I don't bother changing them for Bass.

Fair enough buddy. They just looked a little on the small size, but I know less than bugger all.haha.
What about these red color hooks.Just personal preference thing?
I saw Paul on ifish use a bit of red tubing above a long shank to attract whiting in the surf.

I only change hooks if the ones on the lure are garbage, generally only for cheap lures, I use bronze coloured hooks I dont think it really matters, size 6 for surface lures 45-60mm

Agree with changing trebles on the cheap lures. If they come standard with owner hooks you're most likely to be fine with them. Be careful though, changing hardware can effect the buoyancy and action of your lures. Too much weight in the tail will kill the action.

Beetleyak,what are owner hooks?
I'm going to have a go at making my own minnows.I've got plenty of free time.

Owner is a brand of hooks. Widely regarded as one of the best quality out there. You will pay for them though. The better quality lures often come with them.
Making your own lures is something that myself and many others that frequent this forum have really got into. If you are keen and live within SEQ, you should check out the lure show coming to Ipswich in August. Google "lure show" and you should find the website. Everything you ever wanted to know about making your own will be there.

There you go Fitzy, another free plug mate!

I'm not sure that I see the point in replacing cheap hooks with more cheap hooks.  There are two main reasons people change hooks.  On Barra and Cod lures they change them to get a stronger hook.  On Bass lures they change them to get a sharper, finer, hook.  Cheap hooks are not normally sharper, stronger or finer.  The red hooks you see, if they are expensive red hooks, they are probably Gamakatsu chemically sharpened hooks, if they are cheap red hooks, they are probably cheap red hooks.

Thanks beetleyak, still learning.Yep the lure expo is already on the calendar.I'm between Gatton and Esk.
Yeah.I've seen the lures you guys have made and theyre literally artwork with hooks!
Aussiebasser,I'm not replacing cheap hooks with more cheap hooks.Like you said,it'd be a waste of time.
I'm replacing them for two reasons-1.they're cheap and look very weak,so I have ordered the red trebles that are chemically sharpened.
2.I could be wrong but the size 8 hooks the poppers came with look too small to hook a decent size fish, say over 35cm,so I'm getting size 6.
Thanks for your info guys.

I use size 8 hooks on many of my bass lures. A decent quality brand will handle the biggest bass unless you skull drag them in. I've caught 55cm bass using lures with size 8 trebs.
