Changes to boating speed limit on Cairn Curran Reservoir
Tuesday 12 April, 2016 - GM Water

Visitors to Cairn Curran Reservoir are advised that due to low water levels all vessels are now restricted to five knots to ensure the safety of people boating on the waterway.

The speed restriction applies across all areas of the reservoir open to boating and has been instigated under Schedule 52 of the Victorian Vessel Operating and Zoning Rules for Victorian Waters because the reservoir storage level has fallen below 196 metres AHD (13 per cent capacity).

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) Regional Manager Customer Services West Philip Hoare said GMW would continue to closely monitor the water level.

He said the introduction of the speed limit was to ensure public safety.

Ongoing dry conditions have meant GMW storages have recorded near record low inflows in the past year. From July last year to March this year, just 2.2GL of water flowed into the reservoir compared to an average of 76.8GL.

“I strongly encourage vessel operators to adhere to the speed restrictions, maintain a vigilant lookout for any navigational hazards, and to operate your vessel according to the weather and waterway conditions,” Mr Hoare said.

Mr Hoare also reminded visitors a blue-green algae alert is currently in place at Cairn Curran Reservoir and warned the public to avoid direct contact with the water.

Signage displaying current zoning and rules, as well as warning signs about the presence of blue-green algae, are located at public launching areas at the reservoir.
